The short answer
Every nudibranch is a sea slug, but plenty of sea slugs are not nudibranchs. Sea slug is an informal label for marine gastropods that have lost, reduced or internalised the shell, and it gathers several unrelated groups including sea hares, sacoglossans, headshield slugs and swimming pteropods. How they are related
Sea slug is a convenience term, not a taxon. It is applied to marine heterobranch gastropods that have reduced, internalised or lost the shell, and the groups involved include Nudibranchia, the sea hares in Aplysiida, the sap-sucking Sacoglossa, headshield slugs in Cephalaspidea, side-gill slugs and the planktonic pteropods. Nudibranchia by contrast is a real order, split principally into dorids and aeolids. Saying an animal is a nudibranch is therefore informative; saying it is a sea slug narrows things far less.
A note on naming: Sea slug is a convenience label rather than a clade. It gathers several heterobranch lineages, including sea hares, sacoglossans, headshield slugs and pteropods, that are not each other's closest relatives, while Nudibranchia is a recognised order nested inside that assemblage.
Telling them apart
Start at the head and the back. Nudibranchs carry a pair of rhinophores, often ringed or lamellate, and either a circle of feathery gills near the rear, in dorids, or many finger-like cerata covering the back, in aeolids. A sea hare instead shows large fleshy parapodia and ear-like head tentacles; a headshield slug has a broad shovel-like plate over the head; a sacoglossan often has leaf-like flaps and may be bright green. Shell presence, where visible, rules nudibranch out immediately.
If the animal has two rhinophores and its gills are visible on the outside, as a rosette near the back end or as dense cerata along the body, call it a nudibranch, and note that it is a sea slug as well. If it shows large side flaps, a shield over the head, leaf-like green outgrowths, an obvious shell or wing-like swimming lobes, it is a sea slug from a different group and nudibranch would be wrong.
Habitat and distribution
Both labels cover animals across the world's oceans, from intertidal pools and seagrass beds to coral reefs and deep slopes, with a handful of pelagic species. Nudibranchs are tied to the distribution of their prey, so a sponge-feeding dorid is found where that sponge grows and a hydroid-feeding aeolid where hydroid colonies occur. The wider sea slug grouping adds algal habitats used by sea hares and sacoglossans, and the open ocean occupied by swimming pteropods.
Diet and ecological role
Nudibranchs are mostly narrow specialists, and many species are restricted to one prey type: a particular sponge, hydroid, bryozoan colony or tunicate, with some feeding on other nudibranchs. The wider sea slug label covers much more. Sea hares graze seaweed, sacoglossans pierce algal cells and suck out the contents, retaining functional chloroplasts in some species, and pteropods capture plankton in mucous webs while drifting in open water.
Behaviour
Movement is generally slow and deliberate in both, and most species are hermaphrodites that pair to exchange sperm and then lay ribbon or coil-shaped egg masses attached to hard surfaces. Some nudibranchs swim in bursts by flexing the body when disturbed, and aeolids move cerata actively while feeding on cnidarians. Across the wider grouping there is more variety, including sea hares that release clouds of ink and pteropods that swim continuously with flapping parapodia.
Senses and adaptations
Rhinophores are chemosensory organs that sample water for prey and mates and are often retractable into pockets, which matters for animals that cannot move away quickly. Aeolid nudibranchs perform one of the more remarkable feats in marine biology, passing stinging cells from cnidarian prey undischarged through the gut into the tips of the cerata, where they are deployed for defence. Sacoglossans take a different route, keeping chloroplasts from algae functional inside their own tissues.

Lifespan and life stages
Most species in both categories are short-lived, with many nudibranchs completing a life cycle within a few months to about a year, tied closely to the seasonal availability of their specific prey. Larger sea hares often live around a year and die after a major spawning episode. Reported figures come mostly from aquarium observation and are sensitive to temperature and food supply, so wild lifespans are less well documented than the aquarium record suggests.
