Habitat and distribution
Ladybirds occur wherever their prey does: gardens, hedgerows, arable crops, grassland and woodland across most of the world, and several species gather in large sheltered aggregations to overwinter. Stag beetles depend on dead wood. Larvae develop in buried stumps, decaying roots and rotting logs of broadleaf trees, so adult populations are tied to woodland, old parkland, hedgerow trees and gardens where dead timber has been left in place. Thorough removal of stumps and fallen wood narrows the habitat the larvae need.
Diet and ecological role
The two families feed at opposite ends of the food web. Most ladybirds are predators as both larvae and adults, taking aphids, scale insects, mites and other soft-bodied prey, although some species graze mildew and a few feed on plant tissue. Stag beetle larvae are saproxylic, working through wood already softened by fungal decay with help from gut microbes. Adult stag beetles feed sparingly, mainly on sap runs at damaged trees and on juices from fallen fruit.
Behaviour
Adult ladybirds are conspicuous and active by day, and many species form dense overwintering clusters under bark, in leaf litter or inside buildings. When disturbed they release droplets of bitter haemolymph from the leg joints, a response called reflex bleeding that pairs with their warning colours. Stag beetles are mostly crepuscular; males fly heavily at dusk in warm early-summer weather in search of females, and use their enlarged mandibles in pushing contests with rival males at sap runs.
Senses and adaptations
Both rely heavily on chemistry. Ladybirds locate aphid colonies partly through plant volatiles and the honeydew and alarm pheromones that aphids leave behind, and their warning colouration is backed by alkaloids that make them unpalatable to many predators. Male stag beetles carry antennae tipped with expandable plates that increase the surface available to odour receptors, useful for finding sap runs and females after dark. The male's oversized mandibles are a sexually selected structure and grip poorly compared with the shorter female jaws.
