The short answer

Antennae settle it fastest. A grasshopper is a short-horned orthopteran whose stout antennae are shorter than its body, while a cricket is a long-horned orthopteran whose threadlike antennae often exceed body length. They also sing with different hardware: grasshoppers usually rasp a row of pegs on the hind femur against a forewing, whereas crickets rub one forewing against the other. Grasshoppers hear through a tympanum on the abdomen and crickets through ears on the front legs.

Both are jumping orthopterans found in the same grassland and garden, both sing on summer evenings, and the two names are used almost interchangeably in everyday speech even though the suborders differ in antennae, ear position and sound production.

How they are related

Both belong to the order Orthoptera, which splits into two suborders. Caelifera holds grasshoppers and locusts, distinguished by short antennae. Ensifera holds crickets, katydids, mole crickets and weta, all with long antennae. Cricket in the strict sense refers mainly to the family Gryllidae, but everyday usage stretches it to mole crickets and sometimes to katydids, which are ensiferans but not gryllids. Grasshopper and cricket are therefore group names within one order, not two species.

Telling them apart

Start with the antennae, then check the back end. A grasshopper has short stout antennae, a chunky body, powerful hind femora and a short ovipositor in females. A cricket has long fine antennae, often a flatter body, and females carry a long projecting ovipositor that is frequently mistaken for a sting. Colour is unreliable: both groups include green, brown and mottled forms, and many grasshoppers change tone with the vegetation around them.

Long thin antennae, active after dark, a musical chirp, and in females a long spike at the rear: cricket. Short stout antennae, active in sunshine, a dry rasping buzz, and a short blunt abdomen tip: grasshopper. If you can only hear the insect, the time of day and the tonal quality of the song get you most of the way there before you ever see the antennae.

Habitat and distribution

Grasshoppers dominate open sunlit habitats, including grassland, meadow, scrub, roadside verge and farmland, where they bask and sing during the day. Crickets favour cover: leaf litter, log piles, burrows, rock crevices, dense vegetation and, for several synanthropic species, the warm interiors of buildings. Both occur worldwide outside the coldest regions, and both can be abundant in the same field with the grasshoppers audible at midday and the crickets after dusk.

Diet and ecological role

Grasshoppers are chiefly herbivores, and the group includes the species that shift into gregarious locust phases and strip vegetation across large areas under certain density and weather conditions. Crickets tend towards omnivory, taking seeds, seedlings, fungi, decaying plant matter, small invertebrates and, in house crickets, human food waste and stored produce. That flexibility is part of why crickets have colonised buildings so successfully and why they are farmed as feeder insects.

Behaviour

Male song in both groups functions in attracting females and in spacing rivals, but the acoustics differ. Cricket chirps are tonal and can be highly repetitive, and species-specific pulse rates let listeners separate species by ear. Grasshopper stridulation is drier and often delivered in short bursts from a perch in sunshine. Some crickets build burrows shaped to amplify song, and several grasshoppers add wing crackling in display flights.

Senses and adaptations

The two groups evolved hearing independently and put the ears in different places, abdominal in Caelifera and on the foreleg tibiae in Ensifera, which is a textbook example of convergent sensory evolution. Some ensiferans can detect ultrasound and respond to bat calls in flight. Both rely heavily on hind-leg jumping powered by stored elastic energy in the femur, and both use camouflage colouring matched to grass, litter or bare soil.

Lifespan and life stages

In temperate regions most grasshoppers complete one generation a year, overwintering as eggs in the soil and living as adults for a few weeks to a couple of months. Cricket life cycles are similar in outline but more variable, and species living indoors or in warm climates may breed continuously. Farmed crickets reared under stable warm conditions develop faster than wild populations, so captive figures should not be applied to the field.

Do grasshoppers and crickets make sound the same way?
No, and the difference is mechanical. Most grasshoppers stridulate by rasping a row of small pegs on the inside of the hind femur against a hardened vein on the forewing. Crickets instead rub the forewings against each other, drawing a scraper on one wing across a file on the other, which produces the purer tonal chirp. Some grasshoppers also crackle their wings in flight rather than stridulating at all.
Where are a cricket's ears?
On the front legs. Each foreleg tibia carries a tympanal organ, visible as a small oval window near the knee, and sound reaches it both externally and through a tracheal tube from a spiracle. Grasshoppers hear instead through a tympanal membrane on each side of the first abdominal segment. The two arrangements evolved separately within the same order.
Is the spike on a female cricket a sting?
It is not. That long projection is an ovipositor, used to place eggs into soil, plant tissue or crevices, and crickets do not sting. Female grasshoppers have a much shorter valved ovipositor used to dig into soil and deposit an egg pod protected by foam. Mistaking an ovipositor for a stinger is one of the most common reasons crickets are killed unnecessarily.
Why do I hear crickets at night and grasshoppers by day?
It reflects genuine activity patterns. Most grasshoppers are day-active, basking to reach the body temperature they need and singing in warm sunshine from open perches. Crickets are largely nocturnal or crepuscular, sheltering in litter, burrows and crevices during daylight and singing after dusk. Temperature also affects chirp rate in crickets, which is why their song speeds up on warm evenings.
Are katydids crickets or grasshoppers?
Neither, strictly. Katydids belong to the suborder Ensifera alongside crickets, so they share the long antennae, the wing-against-wing song and forelegs bearing ears, but they sit in their own family and are sometimes called bush crickets or long-horned grasshoppers, which muddles matters further. If you need one rule, the antennae place an insect in Ensifera; family-level identification needs more than that.
