How they are related

Hummingbirds are Trochilidae, more than three hundred and fifty species, placed in Apodiformes with swifts and treeswifts. Sunbirds are Nectariniidae, roughly one hundred and forty-five species, sitting within Passeriformes, the songbirds. The families are not close relatives, and the resemblance is a textbook case of convergence, repeated again in Australasian honeyeaters and in the Hawaiian honeycreepers, all of which converged on similar bills for the same reward.
