Hummingbirds are Trochilidae, more than three hundred and fifty species, placed in Apodiformes with swifts and treeswifts. Sunbirds are Nectariniidae, roughly one hundred and forty-five species, sitting within Passeriformes, the songbirds. Listen too, because sunbirds sing properly.

Habitat and distribution
Hummingbirds occupy nearly every American habitat that flowers, from Andean paramo and cloud forest to desert scrub, temperate woodland and city gardens, with diversity peaking in the northern Andes. Sunbirds occupy African savanna and forest, Asian tropical woodland, Himalayan foothills, mangroves and gardens across their range. Both families concentrate where nectar-rich plants flower reliably, and both follow flowering seasons through altitudinal or local movements.
Diet and ecological role
Both live on nectar plus a substantial proportion of small arthropods, and the insects and spiders matter as much as the sugar because nectar supplies energy but little protein. Both act as pollinators for plants with tubular flowers, and both sometimes rob nectar by piercing the base of a corolla and bypassing the pollen entirely. Nestlings in both families are fed heavily on invertebrates rather than nectar alone.
