It is an artiodactyl in Camelidae. The mule is a perissodactyl in Equidae and is not a species: it is written as a hybrid formula, the cross of a donkey sire with a horse dam, and no valid binomial applies to it. Habitat and distribution

The guanaco occupies open country down the length of South America — Patagonian steppe, high Andean grassland, desert margin and scrub — and tolerates a very wide altitudinal range, from sea level to high plateau. Populations are patchy, with the great majority in Argentina and Chile. The mule has no natural habitat at all. Where mules are found reflects where donkeys, horses and human demand coincide, which in practice means most of the inhabited world, including parts of South America where the guanaco lives.

Diet and ecological role

Both are herbivores on coarse forage, and both handle bulk fibre using microbial fermentation, but by different routes. The guanaco is a camelid with a chambered forestomach and chews cud, which suits sparse arid vegetation and lets it extract a great deal from poor material; it grazes and browses depending on what is available and obtains much of its water from forage. The guanaco has a wild social system: family groups held together by a territorial male, separate bachelor groups, and a loud alarm call given when a threat is detected, with young able to follow the group very soon after birth. Reported figures differ in kind as well as in number. Guanacos are commonly cited at somewhere around twenty years, but wild animals face predation, harsh winters and drought, so typical realised lifespans in the wild are well below any upper figure. Mules are frequently reported working into their twenties under human care, where predation is absent and nutrition is managed. People and these animals

The relationship runs in opposite directions. The guanaco was never domesticated itself but is the wild source of the llama, and it has been hunted for meat and fibre and has come into conflict with sheep ranching over grazing across much of its range; some populations are managed for live shearing. The mule is nothing but a human relationship — it exists only because people cross two species deliberately, and has been used for carriage and haulage for thousands of years. Is a guanaco a wild llama?
It is the llama's wild ancestor rather than an escaped llama, which is a meaningful distinction. Domestic llamas were developed from guanaco stock in the Andes, so the guanaco is the source population rather than a feral derivative. The alpaca, by contrast, traces to a different wild camelid, the vicuña. Feral llamas do exist in places, but a guanaco in Patagonian steppe is a wild animal in its own right, not a domestic one gone loose.
Why can a guanaco reproduce when a mule cannot?
Because a guanaco is a species and a mule is a cross between two. Guanacos breed with other guanacos and their chromosomes pair normally.
