How they are related
Both are South American camelids in the family Camelidae, the same family as the camels of Africa and Asia. Genetic work links the alpaca principally to the wild vicuna and the llama to the wild guanaco, which is why the alpaca is now widely written as Vicugna pacos while the llama stays as Lama glama. Work from the head down. Llama ears are long and curve inwards at the tip; alpaca ears are short, straight and pointed. Then check size: a llama stands well above an alpaca at the shoulder and is far heavier through the body, though a young llama can briefly match an adult alpaca for height.

Habitat and distribution
Neither exists as a wild population. Both were domesticated in the high Andes and remain concentrated in Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, where high-altitude grassland shaped them. Alpacas are strongly associated with the highest puna grasslands, llamas with a somewhat broader altitudinal spread because of their transport role. Both are now kept far outside that range, in smallholdings and fibre operations across North America, Europe and Australasia.
Diet and ecological role
Both are grazers of grasses and other low-growing high-altitude vegetation, and both process forage in a three-chambered forestomach rather than the four-chambered arrangement of true ruminants such as cattle and sheep. That anatomy is efficient on sparse, fibrous pasture. Neither has upper front incisors; both bite forage against a hard dental pad, and both chew cud. Behaviour
Both are herd animals that become stressed when kept alone, and both use a repertoire of humming, body posture and ear position to communicate. Spitting is real in both, but is most often aimed at herd members over food or status rather than at people. Senses and adaptations
Both are adapted to thin high-altitude air, with blood oxygen-carrying characteristics suited to elevation, and both have padded two-toed feet with toenails rather than hooves, which spreads weight and is gentler on fragile alpine turf than a hoof. Both have wide-set eyes and good distance vision over open ground. Reported figures depend heavily on herd health management, climate, workload and veterinary access, and llama and alpaca lifespans overlap so closely that lifespan is a poor identification cue.
