The short answer

How they are related
Both are even-toed hoofed mammals in the order Artiodactyla, but they part company below that. Alpacas belong to Camelidae, an old lineage that also contains llamas, guanacos, vicunas and the true camels. Sheep belong to Bovidae, the family of cattle, goats and antelope. Sheep is itself a loose word: the domestic sheep, Ovis aries, is one species, while the name also attaches to wild Ovis species such as mouflon and bighorn sheep.

Telling them apart
Neck and posture do it instantly. An alpaca carries a long neck upright with a small high-set head, giving a tall, alert outline; a sheep has a short neck and a deep body carried low, with the head down through most of the grazing day. Closer up, check the feet: alpacas have two soft-padded toes with toenails, while sheep stand on hard cloven hooves. Facial fleece and the alpaca's straight pointed ears confirm it.

Habitat and distribution
Alpacas were domesticated in the high Andes and remain concentrated there, though fibre herds are now kept across North America, Europe and Australasia. Domestic sheep have a far wider global distribution, having been carried into almost every climate people farm, from Mediterranean hill country to northern uplands and semi-arid rangeland. Where the two share a paddock, it is on managed smallholdings rather than in any natural overlap of ranges.
Diet and ecological role
Both graze grass and low herbage and both chew cud, but the chambers differ: three in the alpaca, four in the sheep. Sheep are close, selective grazers, using a divided upper lip to crop plants near ground level, which is why heavily sheep-grazed pasture looks shorter than cattle pasture. Alpacas graze without cropping quite so tightly. Specific ration, mineral and pasture-management questions differ by animal and belong with a veterinarian.
Behaviour
Sheep are strongly flock-oriented and follow one another closely, a tendency that has been reinforced by centuries of selection for manageability. Alpacas are herd animals too but hold a looser spacing, communicate with near-constant humming, and use communal dung piles that the whole herd returns to. Both give alarm calls, though the alpaca's is a shrill note quite unlike a bleat. Neither species does well kept singly without company of its own kind.
Senses and adaptations
Both have laterally set eyes giving wide fields of view, and sheep in particular have horizontally slit pupils that stay level with the ground as the head lowers, which suits a long-necked-down grazing posture. Alpacas are adapted to thin, cold high-altitude air, with a fleece that copes with sharp day-night swings. Sheep breed adaptations run the other way, from fine-woolled types selected in warm dry regions to hardy hill types with coarse weatherproof fleece.

Lifespan and life stages
Alpacas commonly live into their mid to late teens under attentive management, with individuals reported beyond twenty. Domestic sheep in farming systems are often quoted with shorter working lives, but pet and conservation-flock sheep can reach their teens as well, so the honest comparison is between management contexts rather than between species ceilings.
