How they are related

The two sit in different orders. The mule is a perissodactyl in Equidae, and is a donkey-horse cross rather than a species. The alpaca, Vicugna pacos, is an artiodactyl in Camelidae, one of four South American camelids alongside the llama, the wild guanaco and the wild vicuña. Its ancestry is the point of interest: the alpaca is generally traced to the vicuña, which is also the animal whose exceptionally fine fleece made the lineage worth domesticating, while the llama traces to the guanaco. Those two domestications produced animals for two different purposes.

Telling them apart

There is no visual overlap. The mule is a large equid with long ears, a level back and a single hoof on each foot. The alpaca is a small, densely fleeced camelid with a short face, a compact body, an upright neck and two-toed padded feet. Alpacas are also frequently mistaken for llamas rather than for mules — the llama is markedly larger with longer banana-shaped ears and a coarser coat, while the alpaca is smaller with short spear-shaped ears and a fleece that grows over the face.

The alpaca's biology is Andean: it was developed at high altitude in Peru, Bolivia and Chile, on cold dry puna grassland, and its fleece is an adaptation to that thermal environment. It is now kept far outside that range, which places real demands on management in hot humid climates. The mule has no ancestral habitat, since it is not a naturally occurring animal, and is found wherever people keep both donkeys and horses. Where the two coexist today it is on smallholdings and farms rather than in any shared natural landscape.

Diet and ecological role

Both are herbivores living on grass and coarse forage, and neither is a ruminant in the strict sense, but the mechanics differ. The alpaca ferments in a chambered forestomach of camelid design and chews cud, an efficient arrangement suited to sparse high-altitude vegetation. The mule ferments in an enlarged hindgut, the equid solution, and is a mixed feeder that both grazes and browses.
