How they are related

Both are ungulates and there the relationship stops. The mule sits in Perissodactyla, the odd-toed ungulates, in the family Equidae and the genus Equus, and is not a species: it is the first-generation cross of a donkey sire and a horse dam, written as a hybrid formula. Camels sit in Artiodactyla, the even-toed ungulates, in the family Camelidae, and camel in ordinary English covers the one-humped dromedary and the two-humped Bactrian, with a separate wild Bactrian population recognised in the wild. The two orders diverged long before either animal was put to work.

Telling them apart

No one confuses them in the flesh. The mule reads as a horse with a donkey's ears and a shorter, more upright mane; the camel is unmistakable for its hump or humps, its long curved neck and its raised head carriage. The feet settle any doubt: a mule stands on a single hard hoof, a camel on a broad two-toed pad that flattens visibly under weight. In profile the camel's back rises to the hump while the mule's stays level.

If the animal exists only because someone crossed two other species on purpose, it is the mule; the camel breeds true and has wild relatives.

Habitat and distribution

The mule has no natural habitat, being a human product, but it is used most where terrain is broken — mountain trails, canyon routes, forest tracks, mine paths and steep farmland. Camels are animals of arid and semi-arid country: desert, steppe, gravel plain and dry scrub, where forage is thin and water is spaced days apart. Both appear across huge stretches of Asia, Africa and beyond because people took them there, but the landscapes each is asked to work are not the same landscapes.

Diet and ecological role

Both handle coarse, low-quality plant material that would not sustain a selective feeder, and both do it as non-ruminants — which is easy to get wrong for the camel, since it chews cud and is often described as a ruminant. It is not one in the strict sense: camelids ferment in a chambered forestomach of their own construction, anatomically distinct from the four-chambered ruminant stomach. The mule ferments in an enlarged hindgut instead, the standard equid arrangement. Both are described as browsing as well as grazing. This is comparative natural history, not a feeding guide.

Behaviour

Both are herd-minded animals that form attachments and both are widely described as deliberate rather than flighty. The mule's caution is the trait most often written about: it tends to halt and evaluate rather than comply or bolt, which suits an animal working exposed ground. Camels are described as tolerant of monotony and long effort, and both males and females can be assertive, with rutting males in particular treated as requiring experienced handling. Neither is a passive machine, and both are widely reported to remember routes and handlers.

Lifespan and life stages

Both are long-lived by working-animal standards, and both are commonly reported working into their twenties with individuals continuing beyond that. Published figures differ between references and between regions, and in both species what an animal actually reaches depends far more on workload, nutrition and access to care than on anything inherent to the species. Neither should be treated as having a fixed span.

People and these animals

Each is a piece of transport history. Camels were domesticated in Arabia and Central Asia and carried the caravan trade across deserts that defeated other animals, and they remain working animals across arid Africa and Asia as well as being raced and kept for milk. The mule was produced deliberately from at least classical antiquity for exactly the qualities neither parent has alone, and moved goods, ordnance and people across mountain country for millennia. Both have been partially displaced by vehicles and both persist where vehicles still cannot go.

Conservation context

This is where the two separate completely. A mule has no conservation status because a hybrid is not a species and forms no population to assess. Domestic camels are numerous, but the wild Bactrian camel of the Gobi is a separate matter entirely and has been assessed as facing a high risk of extinction, with a small and fragmented population. The abundance of working camels says nothing about it. Current assessments should be checked on the IUCN Red List rather than inferred from either animal's visibility.

Which of the two can carry more?
Load capacity depends on the individual animal, its condition, the terrain and the distance, so a single figure for either species would be misleading. The more useful answer is that they are used for different jobs: camels are chosen for sustained carriage across open arid distance, mules for loads over broken or steep ground where footing rather than distance is the constraint. Working load decisions belong with experienced handlers and welfare guidance, not with a comparison page.
Does a camel store water in its hump?
No. The hump is a fat store, and the fat is a reserve of energy rather than of water. The camel's ability to go without drinking comes from tolerating large swings in body water, allowing its temperature to rise during the day so less water is spent on cooling, and producing concentrated urine and dry faeces. It can then rehydrate very rapidly at a single long drink. A mule has none of these adaptations.
Is a camel a ruminant?
Not in the strict sense, though it looks like one. Camels chew cud and ferment plant material in a chambered forestomach, but that stomach is anatomically distinct from the four-chambered arrangement of cattle, sheep and deer, and camelids sit outside Ruminantia. The mule is not a ruminant either and does not resemble one: it ferments in an enlarged hindgut, which is the standard equid solution.
