Why are mules sterile?
Because the chromosome numbers do not match. A horse contributes 32 chromosomes and a donkey 31, so a mule carries 63. During the cell division that makes eggs and sperm, chromosomes must pair up, and an odd, mismatched set generally cannot do so reliably. The result is that mules almost never produce viable gametes. A very small number of foals born to female mules have been reported and genetically verified, but these are exceptional.
Is a mule half horse?
Genetically yes, in that it receives one chromosome set from a horse mare and one from a donkey sire. What it looks like is not a straight average, though. Body size and general frame follow the horse side quite strongly, while ears, mane, tail, hooves and much of the voice follow the donkey. Traits are not inherited as a simple fifty-fifty blend of appearance.
What is the difference between a mule and a hinny?
The direction of the cross. A mule has a donkey sire and a horse dam, while a hinny has a horse sire and a donkey dam. Can a mule be registered as a breed the way a horse can?
Not as a breed, because a breed is a population that reproduces itself. Mule registries do exist and record individual animals, their parentage and their performance, but they cannot maintain a closed breeding population the way a horse studbook does. Do mules and horses behave differently under work?
