Horses belong to Perissodactyla, the odd-toed ungulates, in the family Equidae with asses and zebras — an order whose closest surviving relatives are rhinoceroses and tapirs. Domestic cattle descend from the extinct aurochs and domestic horses from wild horse populations of the Eurasian steppe. Their resemblance is a resemblance of lifestyle rather than kinship.

A note on naming: Cow strictly means an adult female of domestic cattle, and this page uses it in the everyday sense; the species involved are Bos taurus and Bos indicus. Horse likewise covers many breeds of one domestic species rather than a natural group.

Telling them apart

Look at the foot first. A cow stands on a cloven hoof carrying weight on two toes; a horse stands on one. The head then confirms it: cattle have a broad muzzle, a dental pad in place of upper front teeth and, in many breeds, horns over a bony core, while horses have a long tapering face, incisors in both jaws and no horns at all. Tails differ too — a tufted switch on a mostly bare tail in cattle, a full curtain of long hair in horses.

Habitat and distribution

Neither is a wild animal in the ordinary sense; both are managed on pasture, rangeland and in housing across most of the inhabited world, and both were carried far beyond their origins by people. Cattle tolerate coarse fibrous grassland well and are farmed from tropical savanna to cold temperate systems, with breed variation doing much of that work. Horses were shaped on open grassland and remain suited to dry extensive range, and free-roaming populations descended from domestic stock persist in several regions, usually described as feral rather than truly wild.

Diet and ecological role

Both are herbivores living mainly on grass and forage, but the processing differs completely. A cow ferments plant material in the rumen, regurgitates it, chews the cud and passes it through three further compartments, which extracts a great deal from coarse fibre. A horse sends food through a small simple stomach into a large caecum and colon where microbial fermentation happens after digestion, a system that works best on steady small intakes rather than a few large ones. Feeding decisions for either animal belong with a veterinarian or a qualified nutritionist.

Behaviour

Both are social herd animals that rest, move and feed in groups, and both show clear individual relationships within a herd. Cattle spend long periods lying down ruminating, and a resting herd chewing the cud is a characteristic sight in mid-afternoon. Horses rest far less and can doze standing, because a stay apparatus locks the limb with little muscular effort, lying flat only for short periods of deep sleep. Both use posture, ear position and voice to communicate, and the horse's repertoire of whinnies, nickers and snorts is more elaborate than the cow's lowing.

Horses have among the largest eyes of any land mammal and very mobile ears that swivel independently towards sound. Horses commonly live into their twenties and sometimes their thirties under good management, and ponies often outlast larger types. Why does a cow chew the cud when a horse never does?
Because they ferment plant fibre in different places. A cow's four-chambered stomach softens forage in the rumen, and the animal brings a bolus back up to grind it a second time — that is rumination. A horse ferments fibre behind the stomach, in the caecum and colon, so there is nothing to bring back up. The horse instead does all its grinding once, at the mouth, and eats for far more of the day to compensate.
Are cattle and horses closely related animals?
No. Cattle are even-toed ungulates in the order Artiodactyla, which also contains sheep, goats, deer, pigs and, distantly, whales. Horses are odd-toed ungulates in Perissodactyla, whose only other living members are rhinoceroses and tapirs. The two orders diverged long before either animal was domesticated. What they share is a grazing lifestyle and a long history alongside farming people, not recent common ancestry.
Why can a horse crop grass shorter than cattle can?
Teeth and tongue. Horses carry incisors in both the upper and lower jaw and can bite grass close to the ground. Cattle have no upper incisors, only a firm dental pad, and gather grass by wrapping the tongue around it and tearing against the lower teeth, which leaves a longer residual sward behind. That single difference is one reason the two species graze the same pasture to noticeably different heights.
Do horses sleep standing while cattle lie down to rest?
Partly. Horses can doze upright because a stay apparatus in the limbs locks the joints with very little muscular effort, but they still lie flat for periods of deep sleep. Cattle lie down for long stretches, much of that time spent ruminating rather than sleeping, so a herd lying and chewing in mid-afternoon is ordinary resting behaviour. Both species need dry, comfortable lying space and both reduce lying time when conditions are poor.
Which of the two copes better with coarse, fibrous grass?
Rumination gives cattle an advantage on fibrous forage, because material is held, fermented and re-chewed until microbes have had a long working period on it.
