How they are related
Both are bovids, but in different subfamilies: cattle sit in Bovinae with bison and buffalo, and goats in Caprinae with sheep, ibex and tahr. Domestic cattle are usually split into the humpless taurine type, Bos taurus, and the humped zebu, Bos indicus, with widespread crossing between them. The domestic goat, Capra hircus, descends from the bezoar ibex of south-west Asia. Cow strictly means an adult female; cattle is the species-level word.

Telling them apart
No one confuses the two at full size, but the informative differences are in the details. A cow has a broad muzzle with a wide flat grazing surface, a heavy body and a long tufted tail. A goat has a narrow muzzle, a mobile upper lip, a short upturned tail, often a beard, and frequently horns that sweep back rather than curling as in many sheep. Both lack upper front incisors and bite against a dental pad.

If someone says cow when describing a whole farm's stock, they usually mean cattle generally, since cow strictly refers to an adult female of the species rather than to the species itself.
Habitat and distribution
Cattle are kept wherever there is enough grass to support them, which concentrates them on productive grassland, floodplain and improved pasture across every farmed continent. Goats have followed people into far harsher country, including arid, rocky, mountainous and scrubby regions where cattle cannot be sustained, and they persist in island and upland systems as feral populations. The difference in where each thrives is a direct consequence of the feeding difference.
Diet and ecological role
Cattle are bulk grazers dependent on volume, processing large quantities of grass through a four-chambered stomach with a very large rumen. Goats are selective browsers, taking the most nutritious fragments from woody and herbaceous plants and covering more ground per mouthful of value obtained. Both are ruminants and both chew cud. Anything about rations, mineral supplementation or pasture planning is specific to the animal and belongs with a veterinarian.
Behaviour
Cattle form herds with recognisable social bonds and preferred associates, and they spend a long portion of the day grazing and then lying and ruminating. Goats maintain a more visible dominance order expressed through head-to-head sparring, are far more exploratory, and investigate objects and structures constantly. Goats also respond to disturbance by moving to higher or more broken ground, while cattle tend to bunch and move as a mass.
Senses and adaptations
Both have horizontally elongated pupils that stay roughly level with the ground as the head lowers, giving a wide panoramic view of open country while feeding.
