How they are related
Both are even-toed ungulates in the order Artiodactyla, but they sit in different families and are not close relatives. Domestic pigs belong to Suidae and descend from the wild boar, a lineage that never became ruminant. Goats belong to Bovidae, close to sheep, and descend from the wild goat of southwest Asia. Bovids evolved rumination and suids did not, and that single divergence explains almost every practical difference between the two animals as they are kept today.
A note on naming: Pig here means the domestic pig derived from the wild boar, and goat the domestic goat derived from the wild goat. Both names cover many breeds of a single species rather than a natural group, and both are also applied loosely to wild relatives.
Telling them apart
There is little risk of confusing them, but the diagnostic features are worth naming. A pig has a barrel body, short neck, small eyes and a flat mobile snout disc, with sparse hair over visible skin. A goat has a narrow face, a beard in many individuals, backward-sweeping horns where present, and horizontal rectangular pupils visible at close range. Goat hooves are small and used for climbing, while pig trotters are broader and suited to soft, worked ground.

If the animal is chewing steadily while resting and taking in nothing new, it is ruminating, and only the goat does that. If the ground has been ploughed up overnight, the pig was there.
Habitat and distribution
Both are kept worldwide and both have established free-living populations far outside their origins. Pigs thrive in woodland, wetland margins and anywhere with soft ground and shade, and feral pigs are a serious problem for soil and native vegetation in several countries. Goats do best on dry, rough, broken terrain — scrub, rocky slope and hillside — and feral goats have devastated island vegetation where plants had never faced browsing pressure. Neither species is naturally suited to the other's ground.
Diet and ecological role
The pig is an omnivore taking roots, tubers, fungi, fruit, grain, invertebrates and carrion, and its simple stomach means it needs reasonably digestible food rather than bulk fibre. The goat is a browser rather than a grazer and does best on leaves, twigs, bark and shrubby growth, converting fibrous material other stock will not touch. The folklore that goats eat anything comes from their habit of mouthing objects to investigate them rather than from actual consumption. Rations for either animal belong with a veterinarian.
Behaviour
Pigs root, wallow and build nests from vegetation when given the opportunity, and they perform well on discrimination and operant tasks in published work on farm animal cognition. Goats are relentlessly exploratory climbers that test fences, gates and anything that can be stood on, and they too solve problems and retain learned solutions over long intervals. Both are social, both form stable groups, and both show clear signs of distress when separated from familiar companions.
Senses and adaptations
Both have laterally placed eyes and wide fields of view, but the details diverge. Goats have horizontal rectangular pupils that stay roughly level with the ground as the head tilts, holding the panoramic band a browsing animal watches. Pigs have comparatively poor eyesight and an exceptional sense of smell, with a large olfactory apparatus and a snout that doubles as a digging and sampling tool — the same ability that made them useful for locating buried fungi. Lifespan and life stages
Both species have biological potential well beyond commercial practice, so figures depend entirely on context. Goats commonly reach their early teens in good conditions and sometimes older, with dentition, parasite exposure and terrain all playing a part. Pigs can reach a broadly similar age, but commercial pigs are almost never kept to it, so production figures should never be read as a species lifespan.
