How they are related

Both are even-toed ungulates in the order Artiodactyla, but they sit in different families and are not close relatives. Domestic pigs belong to Suidae and descend from the wild boar, a lineage that never became ruminant. Goats belong to Bovidae, close to sheep, and descend from the wild goat of southwest Asia. Bovids evolved rumination and suids did not, and that single divergence explains almost every practical difference between the two animals as they are kept today.

A note on naming: Pig here means the domestic pig derived from the wild boar, and goat the domestic goat derived from the wild goat. Both names cover many breeds of a single species rather than a natural group, and both are also applied loosely to wild relatives.

Telling them apart

There is little risk of confusing them, but the diagnostic features are worth naming. A pig has a barrel body, short neck, small eyes and a flat mobile snout disc, with sparse hair over visible skin. A goat has a narrow face, a beard in many individuals, backward-sweeping horns where present, and horizontal rectangular pupils visible at close range. Goat hooves are small and used for climbing, while pig trotters are broader and suited to soft, worked ground.

Both are kept worldwide and both have established free-living populations far outside their origins. Pigs thrive in woodland, wetland margins and anywhere with soft ground and shade, and feral pigs are a serious problem for soil and native vegetation in several countries. Goats do best on dry, rough, broken terrain — scrub, rocky slope and hillside — and feral goats have devastated island vegetation where plants had never faced browsing pressure. Why does a goat chew the cud when a pig never does?
Because only the goat is a ruminant. A goat ferments browse in a four-chambered stomach, returns a bolus to the mouth and grinds it a second time, which unlocks fibre that would otherwise pass through unused. A pig has one simple stomach much like a human's, so there is no fermentation chamber ahead of the small intestine and nothing to bring back up. That is why pigs need more digestible food while goats can live on scrub.
Do goats really eat tin cans and laundry?
No. Goats investigate objects by mouthing and nibbling them, and a curious goat pulling at a label, a coat or a rope looks very much like eating. What they actually seek out is leafy, woody browse. The reputation persists because their exploratory behaviour is so persistent and so visible. Pigs, by contrast, are genuinely omnivorous and consume a far wider range of actual food than any goat would.
Why do pigs wallow in mud when goats avoid getting wet?
Pigs have very few functional sweat glands and cannot shed heat by sweating, so evaporation from wet skin is their main cooling route. Mud cools for longer than water alone and gives some protection from sun and biting insects.
