How they are related
Both are even-toed hoofed mammals, but they belong to different families. The alpaca is a camelid, sharing that family with llamas, guanacos, vicunas and the camels. The domestic goat, Capra hircus, is a bovid, descended from the wild bezoar ibex of south-west Asia and closely related to sheep, cattle and antelope. Goat is also used loosely for a number of wild Capra species and for animals such as the mountain goat, which is a different genus entirely.

Telling them apart
Silhouette separates them before anything else. An alpaca has a long upright neck, a small high-set head, no horns and a body covered in dense even fleece. A goat has a short neck, a straighter back, often a beard, frequently horns, and a coat that is short in most breeds. Watch how they feed: if the animal is up on its hind legs pulling at a hedge, it is a goat, because alpacas do not feed above head height.

Habitat and distribution
Alpacas come from high Andean grassland and are still concentrated there, though fibre herds are now widespread in temperate farming regions worldwide. Goats originate in the rocky, scrubby country of south-west Asia and have followed people into an extraordinary range of environments, including arid, tropical and mountainous ones. Feral goat populations have established on many islands and mainlands, whereas there is no comparable feral alpaca problem anywhere.
Diet and ecological role
The feeding contrast is the heart of the comparison. Goats are browsers that prefer leaves, shoots, twigs and bark and will strip woody vegetation, which is why they can reshape scrub and why unmanaged feral goats damage island vegetation.
