How they are related

Both are equids in the genus Equus. The domestic donkey, Equus asinus, descends from the African wild ass of north-east Africa, whose remaining wild populations are in a precarious state. The domestic horse, Equus caballus, descends from wild horse populations of the Eurasian steppe; Przewalski's horse is a distinct lineage rather than the ancestral stock, a point often stated incorrectly. Zebras form a third branch of the same genus.

A note on naming: Donkey refers to the domestic Equus asinus, descended from the African wild ass, whose wild populations are in a very different situation from the domestic animal. Horse refers to the domestic Equus caballus; Przewalski's horse is a separate lineage and not its ancestor.

Telling them apart

Start with the ears, which are strikingly long on a donkey and merely functional on a horse. Then look at the mane and tail: a donkey's mane stands upright and short with little or no forelock, and its tail carries long hair only in a tuft at the tip, while a horse's mane falls to one side and its tail is long-haired from the dock. Many donkeys also show a dark dorsal stripe crossed at the shoulder.

Domestic populations of both now live wherever people work them, but each still carries the physiology its ancestors were shaped by.

Diet and ecological role

Both are hindgut-fermenting herbivores that graze and browse, but donkeys evolved on sparse, coarse, fibrous material and extract more from it than horses do, which is precisely why rich improved pasture presents a health risk to them. Horses evolved on more productive grassland and cope better with it, though they too can be harmed by unmanaged access. Donkeys also tolerate water deprivation better than horses and rehydrate rapidly when water is reached. Horses carry broader hooves suited to firmer grassland and a body built for sustained movement in a herd.

Because the parents carry different chromosome numbers. A donkey has 62 chromosomes and a horse 64, so a mule inherits 63, an odd number that cannot pair evenly when reproductive cells form. The hybrid develops normally but almost never reproduces, with only a handful of documented exceptions. A hinny, from the reverse cross, faces the same problem.
