How they are related

Both belong to the genus Equus, which also contains asses and onagers. They are close enough to interbreed, producing sterile hybrids sometimes called zorses, but they differ in chromosome number, which is why the offspring cannot reproduce. Zebra covers three species, which differ in stripe pattern, range and social organisation.
