All camels are browsers and grazers of tough desert vegetation, taking thorny shrubs, dry grasses and salt-tolerant plants that most livestock refuse. All three species share the adaptations people associate with camels: double rows of long eyelashes and closable nostrils against blown sand, a nictitating membrane over the eye, broad padded feet that spread weight on soft ground, and oval red blood cells that tolerate large swings in hydration. The hump stores fat, not water, and a fat store concentrated in one place rather than spread under the skin helps heat leave the body in hot climates.

Working dromedaries are commonly reported living into their thirties, and Bactrian camels are quoted in a similar range, with figures depending on workload, nutrition, climate and veterinary access.
