How they are related

Both sit in Camelidae, which divides into the Old World camels of Camelus and the New World camelids of Lama and Vicugna. The dromedary is Camelus dromedarius; the llama is Lama glama, domesticated from the guanaco. Telling them apart

The hump ends it. A dromedary carries one fat-storing hump and a llama carries none, and no llama or alpaca has ever had one. Size confirms it: an adult dromedary towers over a llama and is several times its weight. Face and ear shape differ too, with the llama's long inward-curving ears having no close counterpart in the shorter, more rounded camel ear. Both, however, share the same long-necked, padded-footed body plan.

Humped, very large, in desert or in inland Australia: dromedary. Humpless, mid-sized, in the Andes or in a temperate paddock with alpacas: llama. If someone describes a camel without a hump, they mean a South American camelid; if they describe a llama with a hump, the animal has been misidentified, because that combination does not exist in either branch.

Dromedaries belong to hot arid country in Arabia, North Africa and the Sahel, and a very large free-ranging introduced population lives in inland Australia. Llamas belong to the high Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, where cold, thin air and sparse grassland shaped them, and they are now also kept in temperate smallholdings worldwide. Both are cud-chewing camelids with a three-chambered forestomach rather than the four chambers of cattle and sheep, and both extract nutrition from vegetation other livestock leave. Both live in groups with defined social structure, and both spit as a social signal, most often at one another over food or status rather than at people. Male dromedaries in breeding condition become markedly more assertive, a well-documented pattern in the genus that has no equally dramatic llama equivalent.

Both share the family's padded two-toed feet, long necks, oval red blood cells and tolerance of dehydration, but each branch pushed different systems. The dromedary has double rows of eyelashes, closable nostrils and a nictitating membrane against blown sand, plus a body temperature that can swing across the day to reduce water loss. The llama's adaptations are altitude-focused, with blood oxygen-carrying characteristics that suit thin Andean air.

Lifespan and life stages

Working dromedaries are commonly reported into their thirties, while llamas are usually quoted in their mid to late teens with individuals passing twenty. The gap is real but is reported from very different management systems, so it should not be read as a precise biological ratio. The dromedary made long-distance trade and pastoralism possible across arid Africa and Arabia, and remains central to milk production, transport and racing culture there. Llamas carried Andean trade goods across mountain routes long before European contact and continue to work as pack animals and livestock guardians. Both are livestock rather than wildlife, but only the dromedary has established large free-ranging herds outside its native range.

Both are working livestock, not household animals. Llamas need herd company, land, shearing arrangements and camelid-experienced veterinary care, and dromedaries add specialist handling knowledge and substantial regulatory requirements on top of that. Legal status varies widely by country. Conservation context

Neither domestic animal is assessed as threatened wildlife, but their wild relatives differ sharply in situation. Why does a dromedary have a hump when a llama has none?
The hump is a trait of the Old World branch, not of the camel family as a whole. Storing fat in one raised mass rather than spread evenly under the skin helps body heat escape, which is an advantage in hot desert and no advantage in the cold Andes. The New World camelids evolved on a different continent under different pressures and never developed the structure at all.
Are llamas and dromedaries close enough to interbreed?
They are relatives in one family, but the two branches have been separate for a very long time and there is a large size difference. Hybrids between Old World and New World camelids have been produced in research settings using assisted reproduction rather than occurring naturally, and the results have been few.
