How they are related
Puffins are three species of Fratercula in Alcidae, the auk family, which sits among the shorebirds and gulls in Charadriiformes. Pelicans are eight species of Pelecanus, the only genus in Pelecanidae, within Pelecaniformes, an order that also contains herons, egrets, ibises and the hamerkop. The two lineages are separated by a long stretch of bird evolution, and their shared reputation for extraordinary bills is coincidence rather than inheritance.
A note on naming: Puffin refers to three species of Fratercula, and pelican to eight species of Pelecanus whose feeding techniques and habitats differ considerably.
Telling them apart
There is no realistic chance of confusion in the field, only in the abstract. A puffin is hand-sized, black above and white below, with orange legs and, in summer, a bill striped orange and grey. A pelican is one of the largest flying birds alive, pale or brown, with a long bill and an obvious throat pouch that becomes conspicuous when stretched. Even in silhouette the difference in wingspan is unmistakable.

Habitat and distribution
Puffins live on cold ocean, breeding on North Atlantic and North Pacific islands and headlands and wintering far offshore. Pelicans occupy warm and temperate coasts, deltas, lagoons, lakes and rivers on every continent except Antarctica, and several species are as much freshwater birds as marine ones. Their ranges brush past each other only where temperate coasts meet, and they are not found feeding in the same water.
Diet and ecological role
Both are fish eaters, but at very different scales and depths. Puffins take small schooling fish such as sandeels and capelin, along with some invertebrates, caught in pursuit below the surface. Pelicans take larger fish, and in some species amphibians and other prey, gathered by scooping at or just beneath the surface. Where prey stocks shift, both feel it, since neither can switch easily to a different foraging method.
Behaviour
Puffins are burrow nesters, arriving at colonies in a mass and raising a single chick out of sight, with adults commuting between burrow and sea. Several pelican species feed cooperatively, driving fish into shallows in a line and scooping together, and they nest colonially in the open where their size deters most predators. Brown and Peruvian pelicans instead plunge-dive individually from height, a style the other species do not use.
Senses and adaptations
The puffin's palate spines, deep bill and folding wing let it hunt inside the water column and still carry a load home through the air. The pelican's pouch is a muscular, highly elastic net supported by flexible lower bill bones that bow outward as it fills, with the water drained before swallowing. Pelicans also have air sacs under the skin that add buoyancy and cushion the impact of plunge-diving in the species that use it.

Lifespan and life stages
Both are slow-breeding, relatively long-lived birds. Puffins ringed as adults have returned to colonies for more than twenty years and some considerably longer. Pelicans are also long-lived, with individuals in the wild recorded well into their teens and twenties and captive birds older still. In both groups, most mortality falls in the first year, so averages across a whole population sit far below what a surviving adult can reach.

Puffins are a tourism draw on northern islands and were historically harvested for meat, eggs and feathers in some communities. Both suffer from fishing gear entanglement, pollution and disturbance at colonies, though the specific pressures differ by region.

Neither is a pet. Both are protected wild birds across most of their ranges, and pelicans in particular are large, powerful and long-lived animals kept only in zoos with substantial water facilities and specialist care.
