How they are related

Swans belong to Anatidae, the duck, goose and swan family, in the order Anseriformes, with roughly six or seven living species in the genus Cygnus plus the coscoroba, which is swan-like but not a true Cygnus. Pelicans form Pelecanidae in Pelecaniformes, roughly eight species, alongside herons, ibises and the shoebill in modern arrangements. The two are not close relatives, and their shared size and pale plumage say nothing about kinship.

Swans use fresh and brackish water — lakes, slow rivers, flooded meadows, sheltered coasts and park lakes — and many populations migrate between breeding wetlands and milder wintering waters. Pelicans use large lakes, deltas, estuaries, lagoons and coasts, and depend on shallow productive water with good fish supply plus safe islands or banks to loaf and breed on. They meet regularly on big lakes and coastal wetlands.

Ringed swans have been recorded into their twenties and occasionally beyond, and marked pelicans have produced comparable and sometimes longer records, particularly in managed collections. Does a pelican actually store fish in its pouch?
Not for long. The pouch works as a dip net: it scoops fish along with a large volume of water, the bird tips the bill down to drain the water out, and the fish is manoeuvred and swallowed shortly afterwards. Chicks are fed by regurgitation rather than by carrying whole fish about in the pouch, so the cartoon image of a pelican using it as a lunch box is misleading.
Why does a pelican fly with its head pulled back when a swan does not?
The pelican's bill and pouch are heavy, and drawing the head back onto the shoulders keeps that mass close to the body's centre, which suits its long soaring glides. A swan's bill is comparatively light and its very long neck streams out ahead in fast powered flight. The contrast is reliable in silhouette and works even when colour and size are hard to judge.
