How they are related

Both sit in Anatidae, the duck, goose and swan family, within the waterfowl order Anseriformes. Swans form the genus Cygnus, a small group of six or seven species depending on the authority followed. Duck is not a clade at all: it is a loose label for dozens of smaller anatids spread across many genera, including dabbling ducks, diving ducks, sea ducks and whistling-ducks. So a swan is a defined genus, while a duck is a shape and a size class.

Telling them apart

Look at neck length first, then the bill. A swan's neck is roughly as long as its body and is held in a curve or a straight column, while a duck's neck is short and thick. Swan bills are deep wedges running high into the face; duck bills are flattened spatulas. On the water a swan sits high and long and a duck sits low and blocky. Grey, gawky juveniles trailing two white adults are cygnets.

Ducks use those same lakes and everything below them: ditches, ponds, temporary floods, fast rivers, coastal bays and open ocean, depending on species. Almost any park lake with swans on it will also hold ducks, which is exactly why the two names get muddled.

Diet and ecological role

Swans are largely vegetarian, reaching submerged plants by up-ending and using that long neck as a probe into water deeper than a duck can work. Duck diets scatter across the group: dabbling ducks sift the surface and graze, diving ducks take molluscs and invertebrates from the bottom, mergansers pursue fish with serrated bills, and sea ducks specialise on shellfish. Feeding waterfowl bread is discouraged by many wildlife bodies on water-quality and nutrition grounds.

Behaviour

Swans defend a breeding territory strongly, and a nesting pair will threaten an intruder with raised wings, arched neck and loud hissing; the display is a warning, and moving away resolves it. Ducks are generally less territorial, and many species gather in large mixed flocks outside the breeding season. Swans also travel as family parties well after the young can fly, whereas most duck broods disperse soon after fledging.

Senses and adaptations

Both are built around waterproofing and insulation: dense down beneath contour feathers, a preen gland whose oil helps maintain feather structure, and webbed feet served by a counter-current blood arrangement that limits heat loss in cold water. The swan's long neck is the main divergence, extending its feeding reach into water a duck would have to dive for. Bill edges in both carry touch-sensitive tissue used to sort food by feel in murky water.
