How they are related

The chicken is a galliform in Phasianidae, domesticated from the red junglefowl of southern and southeastern Asia, and its close relatives are pheasants, quail and partridges. Ducks are anseriforms in Anatidae, the waterfowl family that also holds geese and swans. Duck is not a single species or even a clade; most domestic breeds descend from the mallard, while the Muscovy is a separate species from tropical America with a distinct history.

Telling them apart

Both are omnivores, but they collect their food differently. A chicken scratches away litter to expose seeds, insects, worms and green shoots, then takes items one at a time with a precise peck. A duck strains water and soft mud through the lamellae along its bill, retaining small invertebrates, seeds and plant fragments, and mallard-type ducks also graze and upend in shallows. Slugs and snails feature far more heavily in a duck's intake.

Chickens form a structured social hierarchy — the original pecking order — dust-bathe communally in dry soil, and seek an elevated roost at dusk, a habit inherited from tree-roosting ancestors. Ducks are more loosely social, bathe with vigorous splashing and wing-beating that redistributes preen oil, and settle on the ground or on water rather than climbing to roost. Duck broods are precocial and take to water within a day or so of hatching.

Senses and adaptations

A duck's bill carries dense concentrations of touch receptors at the tip, letting it locate food by feel in muddy water where sight is useless, and its enlarged preen gland supplies the oil that keeps the underlying down dry. Chickens have excellent colour vision, including sensitivity beyond the human range, which suits picking small items out of leaf litter, and they judge distance well enough to place a foot on a narrow perch in near darkness.

Backyard chickens commonly live around five to ten years, and domestic ducks broadly similar or a little longer, though both figures depend heavily on breed, predation, disease exposure and the standard of care. Commercial birds are not kept to those ages. Wild duck species vary enormously, with some individuals recorded well beyond a decade and most dying far younger, so wild and domestic figures should never be quoted interchangeably.

Do all ducks quack and all chickens cluck?
