How they are related
The chicken belongs to Galliformes and the family Phasianidae, with pheasants, quail and turkeys, and descends from the red junglefowl. The domestic pigeon belongs to Columbiformes and the family Columbidae, a family of some hundreds of species worldwide, and descends from the rock dove. Pigeon and dove are used interchangeably with no consistent biological boundary between them, so the words track size and tradition rather than taxonomy.

Telling them apart
The two are easy to separate at any distance. A chicken is heavy-bodied and long-legged with a comb, wattles and a raised tail, and it walks with the head bobbing forward over scratched ground. A pigeon is compact and smooth-outlined with short legs, a small head, a pale fleshy cere above the bill, and a metallic green and purple sheen along the neck that catches the light as it turns.
Comb, wattles, long scaly legs, scratching in the dirt, flying only far enough to reach a perch: chicken. Smooth grey body, white cere, iridescent neck, drinking with its head down and flying strongly out of sight: pigeon. If the nest holds two eggs on a flimsy stick platform it is a pigeon's, and if the young are fed mouth to mouth it is certainly not a chicken.
Habitat and distribution
Junglefowl live in forest edge and secondary scrub and roost in trees, which is why domestic chickens seek cover and elevation. Rock doves nest on sea cliffs and rocky ledges, and their feral descendants transferred that preference to ledges on buildings, bridges and stations, which is why urban pigeons are so consistently found on architectural features that resemble cliffs. One bird moved into the yard, the other into the skyline.
Diet and ecological role
Chickens are omnivores that scratch back litter and pick out seeds, shoots, insects and worms, taking a wide range of animal material when they can find it. Pigeons are primarily granivorous, taking seeds, grain and some fruit and green matter, and they pick from the surface rather than scratching for it. Urban feral pigeons supplement heavily with discarded human food, which is a consequence of the environment rather than a dietary need.
Behaviour
Chickens live in a structured flock with a stable pecking order, dust-bathe communally, and roost above ground at dusk. Pigeons form monogamous pairs that share incubation and feeding, breed repeatedly through much of the year, and perform bowing and cooing displays with fanned tails. Homing pigeons demonstrate a well-documented navigational ability drawing on the sun, magnetic cues and, on the evidence available, olfactory and visual landmarks near home.
Senses and adaptations
Pigeons have exceptional visual acuity and a very wide field of view, and their navigational performance draws on multiple cues including the sun, the earth's magnetic field and familiar landmarks; they also detect very low-frequency sound. Chickens have excellent colour vision extending beyond the human range, which suits picking small items out of leaf litter, and a well-developed sense of the flock around them that governs much of their daily behaviour.

Lifespan and life stages
Backyard chickens commonly live around five to ten years given protection from predators and disease, and kept pigeons often reach a comparable span or longer, with well-managed racing and fancy birds recorded well beyond a decade. Feral city pigeons typically live far shorter lives under heavy pressure from traffic, disease and predation. Wild, feral and kept figures should never be quoted as if they described the same population.
