How they are related

Parrots form the order Psittaciformes and crows sit within the songbird order as part of Corvidae. Genetic work has shown these two orders are more closely related to each other than either is to most other birds, and falcons sit near them too — a rearrangement that surprised ornithologists. Even so, their cognitive abilities developed largely independently.

Telling them apart

No confusion is likely. A parrot has a short strongly hooked bill, grasping zygodactyl feet and, in most species, bright plumage. A crow is uniformly black with a straight stout bill and conventional perching feet. The comparison is about capability rather than telling two similar birds apart.

Which is more intelligent, a parrot or a crow?
