How they are related
Owls form their own order, Strigiformes, divided into the barn owls and the typical owls. Hawks belong to Accipitridae within a separate order alongside eagles, kites and Old World vultures. The two are not close relatives, and their shared features — hooked bills, taloned feet, carnivorous diet — are convergent adaptations to predation rather than inherited from a common predatory ancestor.
Telling them apart
Head shape and posture settle it. An owl has a large rounded head with a flat facial disc and forward-set eyes, and perches upright with a compact outline. Both take small mammals, birds, reptiles and large insects, with prey size scaling to the bird.
