Flamingos form the family Phoenicopteridae in their own order, with six recognised living species. Storks form the family Ciconiidae, with roughly nineteen or twenty species, in a separate order. They are not close relatives. Molecular work has repeatedly recovered flamingos as sister to grebes, an alliance that surprised ornithologists because grebes are compact diving birds with lobed toes.
