How they are related
Sandhill crane is a single species, Antigone canadensis, in the family Gruidae and the order Gruiformes, whose other members include rails, crakes and the limpkin. Heron is a family name, Ardeidae, covering more than sixty species of herons, egrets and bitterns in an order that also holds pelicans and ibises. Cranes and herons are therefore not close relatives at all; the shared tall grey wading build is convergent, and their nearest kin lie in completely different directions.

Habitat and distribution
Sandhill cranes breed in bogs, wet meadows, tundra and prairie marsh, then move to agricultural landscapes and river roosts for winter, with famous staging concentrations on shallow river channels in central North America. Herons live wherever there is fishable shallow water, from tidal creeks and reservoirs to ditches and garden ponds. The two do meet at marsh edges, but cranes spend far more of the day well away from open water.
Diet and ecological role
