The short answer

Puffins and penguins never meet in the wild. Puffins are auks of the cold North Atlantic and North Pacific, small birds that fly on whirring wingbeats and then use the same wings to swim underwater. Penguins are flightless seabirds of the Southern Hemisphere whose wings have become stiff flippers that cannot be folded. Both are pied and both chase fish by wing power, which is convergence rather than kinship. Only the puffin grows a bright plated bill for the breeding season.

How they are related

Puffins are three species of Fratercula in the auk family, Alcidae, which sits within the same order as gulls and waders. Penguins form Spheniscidae, the only family in their own order, with around eighteen species depending on how several forms are treated. The two groups are not close relatives. Their shared traits are the product of similar work in cold water, and the auks are the northern lineage that came closest to the penguin solution without completing it.

Telling them apart

Look at the wing and the setting. A bird that flies in to land, then dives, in cold northern water is a puffin or another auk. A bird that swims with stiff paddle-like wings and never leaves the water except to walk ashore in the Southern Hemisphere is a penguin. In breeding condition a puffin adds an unmistakable triangular bill in orange and red with a grey face, a shape no penguin approaches.

Habitat and distribution

Puffins breed on northern islands, sea cliffs and grassy slopes where they can dig, and spend the rest of the year far out at sea, often in areas well away from land. Penguins breed on Antarctic ice and coasts, subantarctic islands, and temperate to tropical shores in South America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Galapagos, and forage in the surrounding seas. No wild population of one occurs within the range of the other.

Diet and ecological role

Both take small schooling fish and marine invertebrates, pursuing them underwater on beating wings. Puffins target sandeels, herring, capelin and similar prey depending on region, and shortages of these fish have been linked to poor breeding seasons. Penguin diets range from krill in the far south to fish and squid in temperate waters. Both are therefore tied to the productivity of the sea around their colonies rather than to anything on land.

Behaviour

Puffins are colonial and highly synchronised, arriving at colonies together, disappearing underground to raise a single chick, and departing at the end of the season, leaving cliffs suddenly silent. Penguins are colonial too, with some species forming immense aggregations, and many perform elaborate vocal and postural displays that let mates and chicks find each other in crowds. Both walk awkwardly ashore because their legs are set far back for swimming.

Senses and adaptations

Both are countershaded, dark above and pale below, which reduces visibility from above and below in open water. Both have salt glands to shed the salt taken in at sea, and dense waterproof plumage maintained by preening. The penguin adds solid, heavy bones and a flipper unable to fold, while the puffin keeps a folding wing and pays for its flight with wings too small to dive as deep or as long.

Lifespan and life stages

Both groups are long-lived for their size, with delayed breeding and small clutches. Atlantic puffins ringed as adults have been recorded returning to colonies for well over two decades, and some individuals considerably longer. Penguin longevity varies by species, with several living into their teens and twenties in the wild. In both cases first-year survival is much lower than adult survival, so population averages sit far below the ages individual birds can reach.

The name penguin was used first for the great auk, a large flightless northern relative of the puffin that was hunted to extinction; when European sailors met similar birds in the south, they transferred the name, and the northern original kept the older name auk. Today both groups draw heavy tourism, and both are affected by fisheries, introduced predators at breeding sites, oil pollution and shifting prey distributions.

Neither is a pet. Penguins in aquariums and zoos are held under licences with specialist facilities, temperature control, water quality management and dedicated veterinary teams, and puffins are kept in even fewer collections. Wild seabirds are protected by law in most range countries, and injured birds are handled by licensed rehabilitators. Whether any animal suits a household depends on law, welfare capacity and long-term responsibility, and care questions belong with a qualified veterinarian.

Conservation context

Both groups have species under real pressure. Puffin numbers in parts of the North Atlantic have declined where prey fish availability has changed, and colonies are vulnerable to introduced rats and cats. Several penguin species have been assessed as threatened, with sea ice change, fisheries and habitat disturbance among the drivers. Statuses are revised as monitoring continues, so a figure or category quoted a few years ago may no longer stand.

Do puffins and penguins ever meet in the wild?
No. Puffins are confined to the northern hemisphere and penguins to the southern, and the equatorial ocean between them acts as a barrier of warm, less productive water. The Galapagos penguin reaches the equator but no further, and puffins do not approach the tropics. Any photograph showing the two together was taken in a zoo or aquarium, or is a composite.
Why can a puffin fly when a penguin cannot?
Because a wing cannot be optimised for both media. Auks kept flight and pay for it with small wings that make diving costly and limit how deep they go. Penguins gave up flight, which allowed the wing to become a short, stiff, heavily muscled flipper and the bones to become dense. The result is far better diving and no ability to escape land predators by air.
Was the word penguin originally used for a northern bird?
Yes. It was applied first to the great auk, a large flightless seabird of the North Atlantic and a relative of puffins, which was hunted until it disappeared in the nineteenth century. Sailors who later encountered flightless black-and-white birds in southern seas reused the familiar name. The southern birds kept it, and the northern family reverted to being called auks.
Does a puffin's bright bill stay colourful all year?

Photographs almost always show breeding birds, which is why the winter appearance surprises people. Penguin bills do not undergo an equivalent seasonal transformation.
How does a puffin hold so many fish at once?
The tongue presses fish against backward-facing spines on the palate, so caught prey is pinned while the bill opens for the next one. The fish end up held crosswise, heads and tails alternating along the bill. This allows several trips of prey to be brought back in one journey to a burrow chick. Penguins have no equivalent need, since they swallow prey during the dive.
