How they are related

Both are palaeognaths, the ancient branch of birds usually called ratites, but they sit in different orders: ostriches in Struthioniformes and emus in Casuariiformes, where their closest living relatives are the cassowaries. Telling them apart

Look at the feet first, then the skin. Two toes means ostrich, three means emu, and no other living bird shares the ostrich condition. An ostrich also shows a long bare neck and bare thighs, with breeding males in striking black and white. An emu has no bare thighs, its neck is only sparsely feathered, and its plumage hangs in coarse grey-brown strands that read as hair from a distance.

Both tolerate arid conditions, but the emu's habit of tracking rain across a continent has no close ostrich equivalent.
