How they are related

Both belong to the order Casuariiformes within the palaeognaths, and they are one another's closest living relatives. Emus are usually placed in Dromaiidae as a single living species, Dromaius novaehollandiae, while cassowaries form the genus Casuarius with three recognised species: southern, dwarf and northern. Some classifications sink the emu into Casuariidae with the cassowaries, so a source that lists one family rather than two is not making an error.

Habitat and distribution

Emus cross almost every mainland Australian habitat except dense rainforest and heavily built land, and thrive where sightlines are long. Genuine range overlap is limited to that narrow wet tropical band.

Diet and ecological role

The cassowary is one of the most important frugivores in its forest, swallowing large fruits whole and passing seeds intact and often far from the parent tree, including seeds too big for most other animals to move.
