Falcons occupy an even broader spread of terrain, including desert, tundra, grassland, forest edge, sea cliff and dense city centre, with several species treating tall buildings as substitute cliffs. Their ranges overlap constantly, but only the osprey is anchored to open water.

Diet and ecological role

For a raptor the osprey is a remarkably narrow specialist, with live fish making up nearly all of the prey recorded across studies and other items taken only occasionally. Is an osprey a kind of falcon?

Why do falcons have a notch in the bill when ospreys do not?
The tomial tooth, a notch on the falcon's upper mandible, is a family-wide falcon feature usually described in connection with severing the neck vertebrae of prey held in the feet.
