Habitat and distribution
The osprey follows fishable water, occurring beside lakes, rivers, estuaries and sheltered coasts on every continent except Antarctica — though it breeds across only most of that range, since in South America it is a non-breeding visitor — which makes it one of the most widely spread of all birds. Falcons occupy an even broader spread of terrain, including desert, tundra, grassland, forest edge, sea cliff and dense city centre, with several species treating tall buildings as substitute cliffs. Their ranges overlap constantly, but only the osprey is anchored to open water.
Diet and ecological role
For a raptor the osprey is a remarkably narrow specialist, with live fish making up nearly all of the prey recorded across studies and other items taken only occasionally. Falcons as a family sit at the opposite end of that scale. Peregrines concentrate on birds taken in flight, kestrels on small mammals and insects, merlins on small birds, and several caracaras scavenge and take a wide assortment besides. Narrow specialism against broad opportunism is the dietary headline.
Behaviour
A hunting osprey quarters a stretch of water from perhaps ten to forty metres up, hovers on slow beats when something shows, then folds and drops with the feet leading, frequently vanishing under the surface before hauling clear and shaking in mid-air. Fish are usually carried head-forward, a posture long read as reducing drag. Falcons instead close distance in the air, and many species cache surplus prey in crevices rather than repeat a single capture routine.
Senses and adaptations
Both hunt in daylight with high visual acuity and two foveae in each eye, one for forward binocular work and one for scanning sideways. The osprey adds equipment for entering water: dense, oil-rich plumage that sheds it, nostrils that can be closed against the impact, and a nictitating membrane drawn over the eye. Falcons carry different hardware, including bony tubercles set in the nostrils that are commonly linked to airflow at speed. Neither kit is superior; each answers a different problem.

Both are long-lived birds once past a costly first year, and both lose a substantial share of young before their first breeding attempt. Ringing recoveries place ospreys commonly into their teens, with older individuals documented, and large falcons follow a broadly similar pattern of heavy juvenile loss followed by a long adult tenure.
