How they are related
Vulture is an ecological label applied twice over. The New World vultures, Cathartidae, include the turkey vulture, black vulture, king vulture, the yellow-headed vultures and the two condors. Old World vultures sit in Accipitridae with eagles, kites and harriers, so they are hawks that took up scavenging. The California condor is Gymnogyps californianus, the only living member of its genus, and its closest living relatives are the other cathartids rather than any griffon or lappet-faced vulture.
A note on naming: Vulture is a feeding guild, not a clade. Cathartidae in the Americas and the scavenging Accipitridae of Africa and Eurasia acquired the same habits independently, so a family-level statement about vultures is usually wrong for one half of the guild.
Telling them apart
In North America the practical comparison is with the turkey vulture, the bird most often reported as a condor. A turkey vulture holds its wings in a shallow V and rocks in flight, and it is far smaller. A California condor flies on flat, plank-like wings with fingered primaries, shows broad white triangles on the underwing, and adults have a bare orange-pink head. Most free-flying condors also carry large numbered wing tags.
If someone says vulture, ask which hemisphere they mean. In the Americas it is a cathartid; in Africa, Europe or Asia it is almost certainly a scavenging hawk. If they say California condor, they mean one species, and it is a cathartid. So a California condor is always a vulture, while a vulture is very rarely a California condor.
Habitat and distribution
Old World vultures work open savanna, steppe, mountains and, increasingly, rubbish tips and livestock country across Africa, Europe and Asia. New World vultures span the Americas from Canadian summer range to Patagonia. The California condor now uses coastal ranges and mountains in California, canyon country in Arizona and Utah, and parts of Baja California, all following release programmes; historically its range reached much further across western North America.
Diet and ecological role
Both groups eat carrion, and both matter more than their numbers suggest, stripping carcasses quickly and interrupting the persistence of pathogens that would otherwise linger. New World vultures find food partly by watching each other; the turkey vulture is unusual in locating carrion by smell, and other scavengers, condors included, exploit its discoveries. California condors historically took large mammal carcasses and, on the coast, marine mammals washed ashore, which remains part of the diet.
Behaviour
Vultures of both groups soar on thermals to search enormous areas for very patchy food, and both queue at carcasses in loose dominance orders. New World vultures lack a syrinx and communicate with hisses and grunts rather than calls. They also practise urohidrosis, excreting onto the legs, which is generally interpreted as evaporative cooling. Condors are slow breeders, laying a single egg, extending chick dependence for months, and delaying maturity for several years.

The bare head is the classic vulture adaptation in both groups, keeping feathers out of carcass cavities and helping with heat regulation. Highly acidic stomach conditions let scavengers process carrion that would sicken many animals.
