The short answer
One is a warm-blooded mammal, the other a cold-blooded insect, and almost everything else follows from that. A rat keeps a steady internal temperature, which costs a great deal of food and lets it stay active through winter. A cockroach takes its temperature from its surroundings, needs far less energy, and slows or stops when it gets cold. The rat bears live young and nurses them; the cockroach lays an egg case and its nymphs moult their way to adult form without any larval stage.
The main difference
A rat is an endothermic mammal that funds a constant body temperature with a large food intake; a cockroach is an ectothermic insect in an external skeleton whose whole pace of life is set by ambient temperature.
Buildings select for a very specific package — tolerance of dark enclosed space, a broad diet, small gaps and steady warmth — and two lineages separated by more than half a billion years both fit it. How they are related
These two sit about as far apart as two familiar animals can. Rats are vertebrates: genus Rattus, family Muridae, order Rodentia, class Mammalia. Cockroaches are insects in the order Blattodea, which modern classification also contains the termites within, so termites are best understood as highly social cockroaches rather than a separate order. One name covers several dozen rodent species, the other several thousand insect species, and only a handful in each group has anything to do with human buildings.
A note on naming: Rat here means the genus Rattus and cockroach the order Blattodea, which under current classification includes the termites. Statements about household cockroaches describe a very small and atypical subset of that order, and should not be generalised to it.
Telling them apart
Nothing about the two invites confusion, so the useful identification work is within each group. Among cockroaches the household species are separated by size, pronotum markings and wing development, and nymphs of all of them lack functional wings. Among rats the useful check is proportion rather than size: heavy build, small ears and a tail shorter than head and body for the brown rat, slim build, large thin ears and a longer tail for the black rat.
Six legs, long antennae, a flattened body and a hard shell that is shed as the animal grows: cockroach, an insect. Four limbs, fur, external ears, whiskers and a long scaly tail: rat, a mammal. If you find a small wingless version of the flat animal, that is a nymph and not a different species; if you find a small version of the furry one, judge it by proportion rather than by size.
Habitat and distribution
The great majority of cockroaches are tropical and subtropical forest animals living in leaf litter, rotting wood, under bark, in caves and in soil, and many are handsome, diurnal or specialised. A few generalists took to warm, damp, food-rich buildings. Rats followed a similar path from forest, grassland and wetland ancestry into drains, voids and stores. What buildings supply to both is the same short list: warmth, darkness, moisture, structural cavities and a reliable supply of organic material.
Diet and ecological role
Both are detritus-tolerant generalists, which is why they turn up in the same places. Cockroaches are scavengers and decomposers, processing dead plant material, fungi, dung and animal remains, and forest species are ecologically important recyclers; the building species extend that to almost any organic residue including paper and glue. Rats add hard seeds, fruit, invertebrates, eggs, small vertebrates and carrion, opened with continuously growing incisors. Neither is a specialist, and neither can be described by one food type.
Behaviour
Both are nocturnal and thigmotactic — they prefer contact with surfaces and travel along edges rather than across open floors. Beyond that they diverge. Rats show individual recognition, dominance relationships, social grooming, play in young animals and marked caution toward unfamiliar objects. Cockroaches aggregate in response to chemical cues in their own droppings, and the collective effect resembles group decision-making without requiring any relationships between individuals. Several forest species do show real parental care of young.
Senses and adaptations
Each has an elegant solution for moving in the dark. A rat sweeps long whiskers rhythmically over surfaces while smell handles identity, routes and food, and its hearing reaches well above the human range. A cockroach reads the world with antennae that combine touch and chemistry, and carries paired cerci at the rear that detect minute air currents and drive an escape turn measured in milliseconds. Both also fit through gaps that appear far too small for them.

Lifespan and life stages
The two scales are not directly comparable but both are short. Free-living commensal brown rats often fail to reach a year, and animals under human care commonly reach around two to three years. Cockroach lifespans depend heavily on temperature and food, since development itself is temperature-driven; the familiar household species pass through a series of nymphal moults over months before reaching adult form, and adult life adds further months. People and these animals
Both carry heavy cultural baggage that has little to do with the biology of their groups. Cockroach allergens are a documented and serious issue in some housing, and rodents in buildings raise recognised food-safety and structural questions; both are matters for public-health authorities and licensed professionals rather than for a natural-history page. Alongside that, both are laboratory animals: the brown rat is a principal mammalian model organism, and cockroaches have been used extensively in work on locomotion, escape responses and biological rhythms.
Keeping them: what to understand first
Some cockroaches, including large hissing species, are kept as display invertebrates and reared as feeder insects, and fancy rats are widely kept as companion mammals. Neither is recommended here. Some invertebrates are restricted or prohibited in particular jurisdictions, escape of non-native species is a real ecological concern, and any question about housing, temperature, feeding or health belongs with local authorities and, for the mammal, with a veterinarian experienced in small mammals.
