Deer species use a much wider spread of habitats, from dense temperate forest to swamp, mountain, tundra and suburban edge, and several thrive in landscapes fragmented by farming. Where deer and pronghorn share a state, they usually separate by cover: deer to the brush and timber, pronghorn to the flats.

Is the pronghorn an antelope?
No, despite the common name American antelope. True antelope are bovids of Africa and Eurasia. The pronghorn is the only living member of Antilocapridae, a family restricted to North America, and genetic work places its nearest living relatives with the giraffe and okapi. The resemblance to antelope is convergence: similar open-country grazing pressures shaping a similar body, not shared recent ancestry.

Do female pronghorn have horns?
