How they are related

Both belong to Giraffidae, a family that was once far richer and now holds only two living branches: the giraffe and the okapi. That makes the okapi the giraffe's nearest living relative, which is why collections often place them together. How many giraffe species exist remains unsettled, with some authorities recognising a single species carrying several subspecies and others splitting it into four. The okapi, by contrast, is a single species with no close living cousin of its own.

Telling them apart

Height settles it before any other feature: a standing giraffe rises above every other land animal, while an okapi is roughly the size of a horse. Then look at where the markings sit. Giraffes carry blotched patches across the entire body; okapis are dark and velvety with sharp white stripes limited to the rump and upper legs. The okapi head is comparatively small, the ears large and mobile, and males carry short skin-covered ossicones.

Giraffes use open savanna, dry woodland and thorn scrub in a scattered set of sub-Saharan populations, country where long sightlines and emergent trees suit a tall browser. Okapis occupy one region only, the closed rainforest of northern and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, often in dense regrowth near watercourses. Nowhere do the two ranges overlap, so a field question about telling them apart is really a question about which habitat the observer is standing in.

Diet and ecological role

Both are browsers rather than grazers, taking leaves, shoots, buds and fruit instead of grass, and both draw vegetation in with a long prehensile tongue. A giraffe works high in the canopy, reaching foliage that no other African herbivore can, with tree preferences that differ between regions. An okapi feeds at understorey height on forest leaves and fungi, and has been recorded eating clay and charcoal, behaviour usually read as mineral supplementation rather than hunger.

Giraffe groups are fluid, with membership changing through the day in a fission-fusion pattern that keeps individuals loosely associated over wide areas. Okapis are largely solitary, meeting to breed, with males ranging over marked and overlapping areas. Okapi calves remain hidden in cover for weeks, and the extended period before a calf first defecates is generally interpreted as reducing scent available to predators. Giraffe calves gather in crèches where a few adults remain nearby.

Senses and adaptations

Giraffes trade on height and eyesight, scanning open country from a vantage no other herbivore holds, and their circulatory system is built around moving blood up a very long neck. Okapis live where sightlines barely exist, and rely instead on large ears, acute hearing and calls that include very low frequencies thought to carry through dense vegetation without advertising the caller widely. The okapi's oily coat sheds rain in a forest where an animal is wet for much of the year.

Lifespan and life stages

Both are long-lived by hoofed-mammal standards, though wild figures are far less certain than those from managed care. Giraffes commonly reach their mid-twenties in the wild, with older individuals recorded in zoos. Okapi longevity in the wild is poorly known because the animals are almost impossible to follow through dense forest, while individuals in collections have lived into their twenties and beyond. Treat any single number as one sample's typical value, not a species ceiling.

Is the okapi a kind of zebra?
No. The leg and rump stripes create the resemblance, but the okapi belongs to Giraffidae and its nearest living relative is the giraffe. Zebras are equids, in the horse family, and are striped over the whole body rather than only on the hindquarters. The okapi also has ossicones on males, a long dark prehensile tongue and cloven feet, none of which any zebra shows.
Why does the okapi have striped legs when the giraffe has body patches?
The two live in very different light. Okapi stripes break up the outline of an animal standing in the dappled gloom of closed rainforest, and are also visible to a following calf. Giraffe blotching sits against the broken shade of savanna trees. Both explanations are inferred from where the animals live rather than proven for every marking, and giraffe patterning varies considerably between populations.
Do giraffes and okapis have the same number of neck bones?
Yes. Both have seven cervical vertebrae, the same count as almost every other mammal, from a mouse to a whale. What differs is the length of each bone: giraffe cervical vertebrae are enormously elongated, while the okapi's are moderately long by ungulate standards. The giraffe neck is therefore a matter of bone proportion rather than extra segments being added to the spine.
Why was the okapi unknown to Western science until the twentieth century?
It lives at low density in dense, remote Congo Basin rainforest, is largely solitary, moves quietly and avoids open ground. Forest communities knew it well, and reports of a striped forest animal reached European ears before any specimen did. Once skins and then a complete specimen were examined in the early twentieth century, the animal was described formally and its giraffid affinities recognised.
Can you tell a male okapi from a female at a glance?
Usually. Male okapis carry short skin-covered ossicones on the forehead, while females typically show only hair whorls where the ossicones would be, and females also tend to be slightly the larger of the two. This shortcut does not transfer to giraffes, where both sexes carry ossicones and sexing relies on size, ossicone tip wear and overall build instead.
