Rhinoceroses form the family Rhinocerotidae in Perissodactyla, the odd-toed ungulates, whose other living members are horses, asses, zebras and tapirs; five species survive, two in Africa and three in Asia. Hippopotamuses form Hippopotamidae in Artiodactyla, the even-toed ungulates, and molecular and fossil evidence places them as the closest living relatives of cetaceans, the whales and dolphins. Two living hippo species are recognised, the common hippo and the smaller pygmy hippo in a separate genus.

A note on naming: Rhinoceros covers five living species in four genera across Africa and Asia, which differ in lip shape, horn count and habitat. Hippopotamus usually means the common hippo, while the pygmy hippo is a separate genus with different habits.

Telling them apart

The head decides it instantly. A rhinoceros has one or two horns rising from the snout, a relatively long head carried low, and a heavy folded or plated hide. A hippopotamus has a vast blunt muzzle with no horn, wide nostrils on top, small ears and eyes set high, and when it yawns the enormous lower canines and incisors are unmistakable. In water, a hippo shows only the eye, ear and nostril platform, which no rhino ever does.

Habitat and distribution

Hippos need permanent deep water with grazing lawns within reach, and populations concentrate in rivers, lakes and floodplains across sub-Saharan Africa; the pygmy hippo is a forest and swamp animal of West Africa. In parts of eastern and southern Africa the two families genuinely coexist.

Diet and ecological role

Both are herbivores that consume enormous quantities of plant material, but the technique differs. White rhinos graze with a wide square lip, while black, Javan and Sumatran rhinos browse leaves, shoots and twigs using a pointed prehensile upper lip that strips branches. Hippos are grazers of short grass, cutting it with the lips rather than the tusks and feeding almost entirely at night on land, then returning to water before the heat of the day.

Behaviour

Rhinos are mainly active around dawn and dusk, and communicate heavily through dung middens and urine spraying, which map territories and social status across a landscape. Hippos are nocturnal grazers that spend daylight resting in water in groups, using loud calls that carry both above and below the surface. Hippo territoriality is organised around stretches of river held by a dominant bull, an arrangement with no real equivalent in rhino society.

Senses and adaptations

The hippo's skull places eyes, ears and nostrils on one plane so the animal can see, hear and breathe while almost entirely submerged, and the nostrils and ears close underwater; its skin secretion filters ultraviolet light and appears to inhibit bacteria. Rhinos have modest eyesight but acute hearing, with independently swivelling ears, and a strong sense of smell that supports the dung-midden communication network their social life depends on.

Rhinos are long-lived, with figures for well-studied species commonly reaching the mid-thirties to mid-forties in the wild and sometimes more under intensive protection. Hippos are frequently cited around forty years in the wild with longer records in managed care. Are rhinos and hippos related to each other?
Only distantly. Both are ungulates, but rhinos are odd-toed perissodactyls whose living relatives are horses, zebras and tapirs, while hippos are even-toed artiodactyls grouped with cattle, pigs, camels and, most closely, the whales. The two families separated long before either acquired its modern form, and the resemblance people notice is simply what very large semi-armoured herbivores tend to look like.
Is a rhino horn made of the same material as hippo tusks?
No. A rhino horn is compacted keratin, the protein of hair and nails, growing from the skin with no bony core, which is why a damaged horn can regrow.
