Their ranges overlap widely across Europe, northern Asia and North America, and both use farmland, hedgerow, woodland edge, moorland fringe and the margins of towns. Neither animal is long-lived. Most wild stoats die within their first two years, with a minority reaching four or five, and mortality falls heavily on young animals in their first winter. Wild rats typically survive under a year, though domesticated rats kept indoors commonly reach two to three. Can a rat turn white in winter like a stoat?
