Habitat and distribution
Their ranges overlap widely across Europe, northern Asia and North America, and both use farmland, hedgerow, woodland edge, moorland fringe and the margins of towns. Rats concentrate where people store food and where waterways and banks allow burrowing. Stoats need cover and a prey supply rather than human structures, and they range over far larger areas than their size suggests, using stone walls, drainage ditches and rabbit warrens as travel corridors and as shelter.

A stoat is a carnivore. Rabbits and small rodents dominate the diet in most studies, with birds, eggs and invertebrates taken according to season and place, and its size lets it handle prey heavier than itself. A rat eats across the whole range: grain, seed, fruit, roots, invertebrates, carrion and food discarded by people. That flexibility is why rats persist where specialised carnivores cannot, and why stoat numbers follow rabbit and vole cycles so closely.
Behaviour
Stoats are solitary and territorial, covering ground in a restless investigative run and pausing upright on the hind legs to scan before dropping back into cover. Rats are colonial and, in established populations, markedly wary of novelty, following habitual routes with the body pressed to a wall and testing anything unfamiliar cautiously over several visits. Senses and adaptations
The stoat's winter moult is triggered by shortening day length rather than by temperature, which is why populations at a given latitude whiten on schedule while southern ones never do. Delayed implantation is a second seasonal adaptation, decoupling mating from birth entirely. Rats invest instead in flexibility: acute smell, whisker-based touch, ultrasonic hearing and a strong capacity for learning routes and avoiding novelty, a toolkit suited to exploiting unpredictable, largely human-made environments.

Lifespan and life stages
Neither animal is long-lived. Most wild stoats die within their first two years, with a minority reaching four or five, and mortality falls heavily on young animals in their first winter. Wild rats typically survive under a year, though domesticated rats kept indoors commonly reach two to three. Captive figures for both exceed wild ones substantially, so a lifespan quoted without saying whether it describes wild or captive animals carries very little information.
