How they are related

There is no relationship to describe beyond both being vertebrates. Rat in the strict sense means the genus Rattus in the rodent family Muridae, with the brown rat as the reference animal here. Crow is a group name rather than a species: it covers many members of the genus Corvus in the family Corvidae, with the American crow and the carrion crow the usual referents in English. Everything the two share is convergence — separate solutions to the same opportunity — rather than inheritance.

Telling them apart

No one confuses a rat with a crow. What is genuinely worth separating is their signs and their roles, since both are blamed collectively for whatever goes wrong around bins and buildings. A crow is a large black bird working in the open by day; a rat is a brown or grey mammal moving along edges, usually seen briefly and usually after dark. Seeing one does not indicate the other, and the two leave entirely different traces.

Both are among the most successful animals in human landscapes, and both also live independently of them. Brown rats occupy damp low-lying ground, waterways, farmland and the margins of structures, digging burrow systems and swimming readily. Crows occupy woodland edge, farmland, coast and open country as well as towns, and treat buildings and poles as substitute trees and cliffs. In a town they overlap almost completely in space while separating in height and in time.

Diet and ecological role

Both are broad omnivores and that breadth is the core of their success. Brown rats take grain, seed, fruit, invertebrates, small vertebrates, eggs, carrion and refuse. Crows take invertebrates, seed, grain, fruit, eggs, nestlings, small vertebrates, carrion and refuse, and are notable for caching food and for opening hard items — dropping them from height is documented, and some populations use tools. Neither is a specialist, and neither needs conditions to be favourable for long.

Behaviour

Learning is what both are known for. Brown rats sample unfamiliar food cautiously and appear to be influenced by what other group members have eaten; crows are documented recognising and remembering individual human faces, passing wariness through a group, and solving multi-step physical problems in captivity. Both are socially organised — rats around related females sharing a burrow system, crows around pairs and family groups that gather into large night roosts. Both do much of their communicating in ways people ignore: rats in ultrasound, crows in a call repertoire far more varied than the familiar caw.

Senses and adaptations

The two illustrate how differently the same problem can be solved. The rat has modest eyesight tuned to movement in low light, and reads the world by sweeping its whiskers across surfaces and by scent, which lets it work confidently in total darkness and inside enclosed spaces. Lifespan and life stages

The gap is large and worth stating carefully. Brown rats are short-lived: figures under human care are commonly given at roughly two to three years, and free-living animals typically live very much less because predation and disease remove most individuals early. Crows are long-lived birds by comparison, with wild individuals recorded living well over a decade, though most young birds die in their first year. Both animals are treated as nuisances and both are, in different ways, dependent on human waste. The relationship is uncomfortable rather than simple: rats are implicated in food loss and public-health concerns and are a major threat to island wildlife where introduced, while crows attract complaints about noise, refuse and predation of other birds' nests, and are widely persecuted despite their protection in many places. Are rats and crows competitors?
Less than their overlapping diets suggest. They exploit the same food in the same places but largely at different times and at different heights — the crow by day from above, the rat by night at ground level and below. That separation reduces direct contact. Where they do interact it is usually incidental rather than competitive, and neither depends on excluding the other to succeed.
Why are both so hard to discourage?
Because both combine a very broad diet with caution about anything unfamiliar and a strong ability to learn from experience, including from other members of their own group. An animal that will eat almost anything, hesitates before accepting something new, and remembers what went wrong is a difficult animal to manage. Do crows really remember individual people?
Experimental work supports it. Studies in which researchers wore distinctive masks while capturing and releasing crows found that birds subsequently scolded people wearing those masks, that the response persisted over time, and that it spread to birds that had not been captured themselves. That is evidence of individual recognition combined with social transmission. Nothing comparable in face recognition is documented for rats, whose social information runs mainly through scent.
Which of the two is more intelligent?
