The mule is a perissodactyl in Equidae, and is not a species but a donkey-horse cross carrying 63 chromosomes and effectively always sterile. Elephants are proboscideans in Elephantidae, and elephant covers more than one species: the African savanna elephant, the African forest elephant — now generally recognised as separate species — and the Asian elephant, which is the species overwhelmingly involved in working traditions. Proboscidea is a much-reduced order, and these few species are all that remain of a formerly diverse group.

Are working elephants domesticated?
No, and this is the most important thing on this page. Domestication is a process acting on a population over many generations, producing an animal genetically and behaviourally distinct from its wild ancestors — as happened with donkeys and horses, and therefore with the mule. Elephants have been tamed and trained individually for thousands of years, and some are captive-bred, but the species was never domesticated. A working elephant is a wild-type animal in captivity.
Why does the tamed-versus-domesticated distinction matter?
Because it changes what the animal is and what it needs. A domesticated animal has been shaped over generations to live alongside people; a tamed wild animal has not, and retains the behaviour, social requirements and lifespan of its wild counterparts. For elephants that means matriarchal family structures, decades-long lives and very slow reproduction, none of which captivity accommodates easily. Do mules and elephants digest food the same way?
