The mule is a perissodactyl in Equidae, and is not a species but a donkey-horse cross carrying 63 chromosomes and effectively always sterile. Diet and ecological role
Both are herbivores that ferment plant material in an enlarged hindgut rather than in a chambered stomach, which is a genuine shared feature and an unusual one across such distantly related animals. The scale differs enormously: an adult elephant consumes very large quantities of grass, browse, bark, roots and fruit daily and spends much of the day and night feeding, and its digestion is comparatively inefficient, passing a great deal. That bulk feeding makes elephants significant shapers of vegetation, pushing over trees and opening habitat in ways no equid does.
Behaviour
The differences here matter for how each animal experiences work. Elephants live in matriarchal family groups of related females led by the oldest, with knowledge of water sources and routes carried by that individual; bulls leave the natal group and live more separately.
