How they are related
Cryptobranchidae contains only two living genera: Cryptobranchus in North America and Andrias in East Asia, a split that reflects an ancient distribution of the family across the northern continents. Recent genetic work has broken what was long treated as a single Chinese giant salamander into more than one species, so the Asian side of this comparison is a group rather than an individual animal. The hellbender includes recognised regional forms, notably in the Ozarks.

Telling them apart
Scale is the first clue: an animal noticeably longer than an adult human arm is Asian rather than American. On the head and neck, a hellbender shows a pair of open gill slits that Andrias closes over at metamorphosis. Both are flattened, wrinkled, small-eyed and brown to grey, so colour is of limited help, and the practical separator for most readers is simply which continent the stream is on.

Habitat and distribution
Hellbenders occupy fast, cool, well-oxygenated streams with a bed of large flat rocks, under which adults shelter and males guard nests. Asian giant salamanders occupy cool mountain streams and rivers in China and Japan, using rock cavities and bank burrows. Both are extremely sensitive to sediment, dam construction and warming water, because a stream that silts up loses the crevices they depend on and the oxygen their skin breathing requires.
Diet and ecological role
Both are ambush predators of stream invertebrates and small vertebrates, with crayfish central to the hellbender's diet and fish, crustaceans and amphibians featuring in Andrias diets. Feeding is by rapid asymmetrical suction, opening the jaw fast enough to draw water and prey into the mouth. Neither pursues prey over distance; both wait in cover and take what passes close, which suits animals with poor eyesight in turbulent water.
Behaviour
Both are nocturnal and largely sedentary, with males of both branches defending nest sites and guarding eggs, a behaviour unusual enough in amphibians to be a notable shared trait. Hellbender males occupy and defend a chosen rock shelter through the breeding season. Andrias males defend den cavities, and aggressive encounters between rival males have been documented. Neither branch has a terrestrial adult stage.
Senses and adaptations
Both have small eyes of limited use in turbid, fast water and rely on chemical cues and on sensory cells that detect water movement, allowing them to sense disturbance from prey nearby. Skin breathing does much of the respiratory work in both, which is why the extensive folds matter: they add surface area. That dependence also makes both branches unusually vulnerable to declining oxygen levels and to warming water.

Lifespan and life stages
Both are long-lived by amphibian standards. Hellbenders are reported to live for several decades in the wild, with individuals of twenty-five years and more documented, and slow maturity means populations recover slowly from losses. Captive Andrias have been reported to reach ages beyond fifty years, though such records reflect protected conditions. Longevity in both cases is a conservation issue, since long-lived slow breeders cannot absorb sustained adult mortality.

Hellbender populations have declined across much of their range through sedimentation, dam building, water quality decline and disease, with some regional forms of particular concern. Asian giant salamanders have been hit hard by harvesting for the food trade and by habitat modification, and the taxonomic splitting of the Chinese populations means several newly recognised species may be in worse shape than the old single-species assessment suggested.
