How they are related

Both are great apes in the family Hominidae. Gorilla contains two species, the western gorilla and the eastern gorilla, each with two recognised subspecies including the mountain gorilla. Chimpanzee normally means Pan troglodytes, which has several subspecies, while the bonobo is the separate species Pan paniscus. Within the family, chimpanzees and bonobos are the closest living relatives of humans, and gorillas sit on a branch that separated earlier, so the two are relatives rather than near-twins.

A note on naming: Gorilla covers two species and four subspecies, and chimpanzee here means Pan troglodytes with its several subspecies, so statements describe typical members rather than one fixed animal. The bonobo is a separate species and is not covered by the chimpanzee figures.

Telling them apart

Bulk and head shape do it immediately. An adult gorilla is massive across the chest and shoulders, with a jet-black face, wide flaring nostrils and, in mature males, a domed skull crest and silver saddle. A chimpanzee is far lighter in build, with prominent ears, a face that is pale in youth and darkens with age, and a flatter braincase. In motion, chimpanzees are quicker and climb far more, while gorillas travel mostly on the ground.

Habitat and distribution

Both are African forest apes with overlapping ranges in central Africa. Gorillas occupy lowland, swamp and montane forest in Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Chimpanzees range far more widely, from West Africa east to western Tanzania, and use dry woodland and savanna mosaic as well as rainforest. Where the two occur together, they exploit different foods and different levels of the same forest.

Diet and ecological role

Gorillas are bulk plant feeders. Mountain gorillas live largely on leaves, stems and pith, while western lowland gorillas take a great deal of fruit when it is available, so the stereotype of a uniformly leaf-eating gorilla is wrong. Chimpanzees are ripe-fruit specialists that supplement heavily with leaves, seeds and insects, and they hunt cooperatively, with red colobus monkeys documented as prey at several long-term study sites. Neither ape is a carnivore, but only chimpanzees hunt regularly.

The social architecture is the deepest difference. Gorilla groups travel, feed and rest as a unit around a dominant silverback who leads movement and mediates conflict. Chimpanzee communities are far looser: individuals meet, forage and separate in changing parties, and males cooperate in patrols along community boundaries. Wild gorillas are usually cited in a similar band, with zoo animals recorded past fifty. Are gorillas or chimpanzees more closely related to humans?
Chimpanzees, along with bonobos. Within the great ape family the gorilla lineage separated earlier, and the chimpanzee and bonobo branch is the closest living relative of our own. That ordering is consistent across genetic studies. It does not make chimpanzees ancestors of humans; the relationship runs through a shared ancestor from which both lines diverged, and gorillas share a slightly older common ancestor with all of us.
