How they are related
Both belong to the tribe Papionini within the Old World monkey family, so macaques and baboons are relatives at roughly the level of two branches of one group. Macaca is a large genus of around two dozen species, including the rhesus macaque, the Japanese macaque, the crab-eating macaque and the Barbary macaque. Papio contains five commonly recognised baboon species. Neither genus contains the other, and neither name sits at a rank above the other.

Telling them apart
Face length is the most consistent cue. A baboon's muzzle projects forward and downward like a dog's, with nostrils at the tip, while a macaque's face is shorter and flatter in profile. Size supports it, since adult male baboons are far heavier than almost any macaque. Tail is unreliable on its own, because macaque tails range from long and whip-like to nearly absent, but a long tail carried with a sharp kink near the base points to a baboon.
Long dog-like muzzle, heavy build, long kinked tail, African savanna or rocky slope: baboon. Shorter flatter face, smaller body, a tail anything from long to absent, and a location anywhere from Gibraltar to Japan: macaque. Asia is a strong but not absolute signal, because hamadryas baboons reach the south-western Arabian Peninsula; a very large monkey in African grassland, meanwhile, is very unlikely to be a macaque.
Habitat and distribution
Geography does most of the work. Baboons live in Africa south of the Sahara plus the south-western Arabian peninsula, in savanna, woodland, escarpment and semi-desert. Macaques occupy an enormous span: the Barbary macaque in North Africa and on Gibraltar, the rhesus macaque across South Asia, the crab-eating macaque through Southeast Asian forest and mangrove, and the Japanese macaque in mountains with heavy winter snow. Only in North Africa do the two genera come anywhere near each other.
Diet and ecological role
Both are opportunistic omnivores with cheek pouches, eating fruit, seeds, leaves, roots, invertebrates and occasional small vertebrates. Baboons dig extensively for tubers and corms in dry seasons, and some populations take small antelope. Macaques vary with habitat, with crab-eating macaques foraging on shorelines and in mangroves while Japanese macaques strip bark and eat buds through winter. Both readily exploit crops, bins and food offered by tourists, which drives most conflict with people.
Behaviour
Both live in multi-male, multi-female groups organised around female kin lines that daughters inherit, and both show clear dominance relationships. The differences lie in tone and structure: macaque species range from tolerant to strongly despotic in how dominance is expressed, and hamadryas baboons have an unusual multi-level society of one-male units nested into bands and troops. Japanese macaques are known for behavioural traditions such as hot-spring bathing and food washing that spread by social learning.
Senses and adaptations
Shared papionin equipment includes trichromatic colour vision, dexterous hands, and cheek pouches that let an animal gather food quickly and process it later somewhere safer. Where they differ is climate tolerance. Macaques as a genus stretch from equatorial mangrove to snowy temperate mountain, with thick winter coats and behavioural strategies in the northern species. Baboons are adapted instead to heat and aridity, and to long daily travel between water and safe sleeping cliffs or trees.

Lifespan and life stages
Both genera are long-lived for monkeys. Wild individuals surviving to adulthood in either group are commonly reported living into their twenties, and captive animals of both have been recorded rather longer under veterinary care. Provisioned populations near people can show unusual survival and reproduction because food is abundant and predictable, so figures from temple troops or campsite groups should not be read as natural values for the species.
