How they are related

Both are great apes, but they sit on opposite sides of the family. Orangutans form the subfamily Ponginae, the branch that separated earliest among living great apes, and comprise three species: Bornean, Sumatran and the Tapanuli orangutan described in 2017. Chimpanzees belong to Homininae alongside gorillas and humans, and the genus Pan contains the common chimpanzee and the bonobo. A chimpanzee is therefore a closer relative of a human than of an orangutan.

A note on naming: Orangutan covers three species — Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli — that differ in size, hair and behaviour, and chimpanzee here means Pan troglodytes rather than the closely related bonobo.

Telling them apart

Colour alone is usually enough. Chimpanzees are black-haired with bare dark faces and prominent ears, while orangutans are covered in long reddish-orange hair with much smaller ears set close to the head. Build confirms it: an orangutan looks broad and heavy through the torso with arms of exaggerated length, whereas a chimpanzee is more compact and stands more upright. An adult male orangutan with wide flat cheek flanges cannot be mistaken for anything else.

Habitat and distribution

The ranges do not meet. Chimpanzees occupy a wide belt of equatorial Africa including rainforest, gallery forest, woodland and savanna mosaic, and some populations live in surprisingly dry country. Orangutans are confined to lowland and peat-swamp forest on Borneo and Sumatra, with the Tapanuli population restricted to a small area of upland forest. Orangutan distribution is tied tightly to fruiting forest, which is why logging and plantation conversion cut into it so directly.

Diet and ecological role

Both are fruit-centred, but the orangutan is the more committed frugivore. Orangutans track fruiting trees across the canopy, lean heavily on figs, and fall back on bark, leaves and insects when fruit fails, a pattern shaped by the irregular mast fruiting of Southeast Asian forest. Chimpanzees also prize ripe fruit but add leaves, seeds, insects gathered with tools, and meat from hunted monkeys and small mammals. Only the chimpanzee hunts as a regular group activity.

Behaviour

Sociality is the sharpest contrast. Chimpanzee life is loud and collective: parties form and dissolve, alliances shift, males patrol community boundaries together, and calls carry far through the forest. Orangutans meet far less often, with adult females accompanied by one dependent offspring and males ranging alone, advertising presence by long call rather than by meeting. Both use tools, and in both species the specific techniques differ between populations rather than being uniform.

Senses and adaptations

Both apes have colour vision and hands capable of precise manipulation, but the orangutan's body is a specialist's. Its hip joints are exceptionally mobile, its hands and feet both work as hooks, and its weight is distributed for slow deliberate clambering that sways trees rather than leaping between them. The chimpanzee retains a more generalised body that copes with ground travel and fast climbing alike. The orangutan throat sac amplifies male long calls, suiting a widely dispersed population.

Lifespan and life stages

Both are long-lived, and both sets of figures describe adult survival rather than averages across all births. Wild chimpanzees commonly reach their thirties and forties and captive individuals have passed fifty. Wild orangutans are usually cited in a similar band, with captive animals recorded into their fifties and beyond. Slow reproduction compounds the difference in conservation terms, since an orangutan female may raise only a handful of offspring across an entire lifetime.

Chimpanzees have a long and contested history in biomedical research and entertainment, much of it curtailed in recent decades, and they remain targets of the bushmeat trade and of trade in infants. Orangutans lose habitat to logging, fire and plantation agriculture, and orphaned infants pass through rehabilitation centres before release attempts. Both are protected internationally, and viewing rules impose distance and health screening because apes catch human respiratory infections.

Both species appear as infants in illegal trade, and in both cases the infant is usually taken after adults have been killed. Neither can be kept appropriately in a household: they are powerful, long-lived and socially complex, and international law protects them. Confiscated animals belong in accredited sanctuaries with veterinary and behavioural expertise. Are orangutans and chimpanzees found on the same continent?
No, and that is the fastest way to separate them. Chimpanzees live only in equatorial Africa, across a belt running from Senegal and Guinea east to western Tanzania. Orangutans live only on the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Any wild ape photographed in Africa is therefore not an orangutan, and any wild ape photographed on Borneo or Sumatra is not a chimpanzee.
Why do male orangutans have those flat cheek pads?
The pads, called flanges, develop in dominant adult males along with a throat sac used to produce long calls that carry through the forest. Notably, not all mature males develop them: some remain unflanged for years and can flange later if the local dominant male disappears. Chimpanzees have no equivalent structure at all, so a flanged face identifies an orangutan immediately and unambiguously.
Which ape spends more time in trees, a chimpanzee or an orangutan?
The orangutan, by a wide margin. It is the largest habitually arboreal mammal, travelling and feeding in the canopy and descending to the ground infrequently, more often on Borneo than on Sumatra.
