How they are related

Both are Panthera. The snow leopard is Panthera uncia and the leopard is Panthera pardus, so they are congeners rather than variants of one species. The snow leopard was historically placed in its own genus, Uncia, before molecular work moved it into Panthera, where it is often recovered as close to the tiger. The leopard is a single species with many recognised subspecies across Africa and Asia, several now severely restricted in range.

Habitat and distribution

The snow leopard is confined to the mountain systems of Central and South Asia, using rocky terrain, cliffs, ridgelines and alpine meadow, and it moves seasonally with prey rather than staying at one elevation. The leopard occupies an enormous range across Africa and Asia at almost any altitude, from coastal scrub to montane forest. In a handful of Asian mountain ranges the two brush against one another, generally separated by elevation and vegetation.

Diet and ecological role

Both take the mid-sized ungulates their landscape offers. Snow leopards rely heavily on wild sheep and goats such as blue sheep and ibex, supplemented by marmots, hares and gamebirds, and their prey base is thin and widely spread, which forces very large home ranges. Leopards are far more catholic, taking antelope, primates, birds, reptiles and rodents, and that breadth is a major reason they persist in landscapes that have lost their larger carnivores.

Both are solitary and territorial, scent-mark heavily and hunt by stalking to close range in broken cover. The snow leopard's world is vertical: it moves along cliff bands and ridges and uses steep terrain to approach prey from above. It also wraps its tail around itself when resting in cold. Leopards climb readily too, but their defining habit is hauling carcasses into trees where competition from lions and hyenas demands it, a pressure absent from high mountains.

Is a snow leopard just a leopard that lives in the snow?
No. Panthera uncia and Panthera pardus are separate species, not colour forms of one animal. They differ in coat structure, rosette pattern, tail thickness, skull shape, vocal ability and habitat. Genetic work actually places the snow leopard close to the tiger within Panthera rather than as the leopard's nearest relative, so the shared common name is misleading about the relationship as well as about the biology.
Why is a snow leopard's tail so thick?
It does two jobs. It acts as a counterbalance on cliff ledges and steep scree where a misplaced step matters, and it provides insulation: a resting snow leopard commonly curls the tail around its body and across its face. The tail is close to body length and its bulk comes from very dense fur rather than from muscle mass, which is why it looks disproportionate compared with a leopard's slim tail.
Can a snow leopard roar like a leopard?
No. Despite being placed in Panthera, the snow leopard does not produce the sawing territorial roar that leopards, lions and tigers use. Its repertoire includes a distinctive puffing chuff, moans, growls and yowls. The reason lies in differences in the throat and hyoid apparatus. It is a useful reminder that membership of the roaring cat genus does not guarantee the roaring call itself.
Do snow leopards and leopards ever share the same mountains?
Marginally. In parts of the Himalaya and neighbouring Asian ranges the two occur in the same broad landscape, generally separated by elevation and vegetation, with leopards in wooded lower slopes and snow leopards on higher rock and alpine meadow. Camera-trap work in some areas has recorded both, and shifting treelines are a live research question, but across most of both ranges they simply do not overlap.
What is an ounce, and is it a different cat?
Ounce is an older English name for the snow leopard, preserved in the scientific name Panthera uncia and in some historical literature. It is not a separate animal. The word arrived through a chain of European languages and was applied to several spotted cats before settling on this one. If a text mentions the ounce alongside the snow leopard as though they were two species, that text is unreliable.
