How they are related

The leopard is Panthera pardus, one of the five roaring cats of Panthera, alongside the lion, tiger, jaguar and snow leopard. The cougar is Puma concolor and sits outside that genus, in a lineage grouped with the jaguarundi and, more distantly, the cheetah. They are therefore not close relatives, and their resemblance is functional rather than genealogical. The leopard has numerous recognised subspecies across its enormous range, several of which are severely restricted today.

Telling them apart

No wild encounter requires this comparison, since the ranges do not overlap, but photographs and zoo enclosures do. A leopard's coat is covered in small tight rosettes with solid spots on the head, throat and legs. An adult cougar has no markings whatsoever. Shape helps in poor images: cougars have a small round head on a long lean body with an unusually long, thick, dark-tipped tail, while leopards are more muscular through the shoulders and forelimbs.

Habitat and distribution

Both are unusually flexible. The cougar spans more latitude than any other wild land mammal in the Americas, from Canadian forest to Patagonian steppe, and occupies deserts, mountains, wetlands and rainforest along the way. The leopard occupies savanna, dense forest, arid scrub and montane habitat across Africa and Asia, and persists on the edges of large human settlements more successfully than most large carnivores. Neither is tied to one vegetation type.

Diet and ecological role

Both are generalist obligate carnivores that take whatever mid-sized prey a region offers. Cougars rely heavily on deer through much of North and South America, supplementing with smaller mammals where deer are scarce. Leopards are among the most catadromous feeders of any big cat in terms of breadth, taking antelope, primates, birds, reptiles and rodents according to local availability, which is a major reason they have survived where larger specialists have not.

Behaviour

Both are solitary, hold and mark home ranges, and hunt by stalking to close range rather than by long pursuit. The clearest behavioural divergence is what happens after the kill. Leopards commonly drag carcasses into trees, a response to competition from lions, spotted hyenas and other scavengers on African savannas. Cougars face far less kleptoparasitism and instead cache kills under vegetation or soil on the ground, returning across several nights.

Senses and adaptations

Both have the reflective tapetum lucidum and large forward-facing eyes that make cats effective at dusk and after dark, and both rely on stealth and a short explosive final approach. The leopard's strength is climbing, with forelimb and shoulder musculature that lets it haul heavy carcasses vertically. The cougar's is leaping, with long hind limbs and a heavy tail acting as a counterbalance across steep, broken and rocky terrain.

Wild lifespans for both are usually cited in roughly the same band, around a decade give or take, with substantially longer records in captivity. Averages are dragged down by mortality among cubs and dispersing subadults, and differ by study site depending on hunting pressure, road mortality, prey density and conflict with people. Could a cougar and a leopard ever meet in the wild?
No. Their wild ranges are on separate landmasses: the cougar occurs only in the Americas and the leopard only in Africa and Asia. There is no natural zone of contact, and there is no evidence of either species establishing wild populations on the other's continent. Any image showing both together is from a zoo or a sanctuary, which is exactly why this comparison is about ecological roles rather than field identification.
Why do leopards put kills in trees when cougars do not?
Competition. Leopards share African savannas with lions and spotted hyenas, which readily steal carcasses, so hauling a kill into a tree protects the meal. Cougars face much weaker kleptoparasitism across most of their range — bears are the main exception in parts of North America — so covering a carcass with vegetation or soil is usually sufficient.
