Is polar bear fur actually white?
No. The guard hairs are hollow and translucent rather than pigmented white, and they appear pale because they scatter light. Beneath them the skin is black, which helps absorb what solar energy is available. The visible colour also shifts with season and condition, appearing yellower in older animals. The arrangement is an insulation and camouflage system rather than a simple pigment.
Why do polar bears not hibernate?
Because their food remains available.
