Are polar bears and brown bears the same species?
No, they are separate species — Ursus maritimus and Ursus arctos — but they are each other's closest living relatives and diverged relatively recently. They can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, and genomic work shows historical gene flow between them. Being able to hybridise does not merge them: they differ in skull shape, coat, dentition, denning behaviour and diet in ways that hold consistently across their ranges.
Is polar bear fur really white?
The hairs are not pigmented white; they contain no pigment and scatter light, which is why the coat reads white against snow and can look cream or yellow as it ages between moults.
