How they are related
Both are Ursus, the genus that also holds the American and Asiatic black bears. Genetic work consistently recovers the polar bear and brown bear as each other's closest living relatives, with divergence usually placed within the last few hundred thousand years, though published estimates vary widely and the history includes gene flow in both directions. Hybrids occur in captivity and have been confirmed in the wild, and they are fertile, which is unusual between species this different ecologically.
Telling them apart
Colour does most of the work in practice, but structure is safer. A brown bear shows a pronounced muscular hump over the shoulders, a dished face and a short broad muzzle. Polar bear fur ranges from white to yellowish with age and season, while brown bears run from blond to almost black, so a pale bear is not automatically a polar bear.

Habitat and distribution
The brown bear holds one of the largest ranges of any land carnivore, from Iberian and Balkan remnants through Russia to Alaska and western Canada, using forest, tundra, alpine meadow and salmon coasts. The polar bear is circumpolar and tied to sea ice, hunting at the ice edge and over the frozen shelf and coming ashore where ice retreats. Overlap is limited to a northern fringe including parts of the Canadian Arctic coast and northern Alaska.
Diet and ecological role
The split is stark. Brown bears are omnivores whose intake is dominated in many populations by vegetation — grasses, sedges, roots and berries — supplemented by insects, carrion, ungulate calves and, where available, spawning salmon that builds extraordinary condition before denning. Polar bears are hypercarnivores whose energy comes mainly from seal blubber taken at breathing holes, at birth lairs or along the ice edge. Time stranded ashore without ice means limited food, since land foraging rarely replaces seal fat.
Behaviour
Brown bears build a den in autumn and spend the coldest months dormant, emerging lighter and, for females, with cubs born during the denning period. Polar bears stay active on the ice all winter when hunting is best, and only pregnant females den. Both are largely solitary outside breeding and mother-cub groups, and both concentrate where food is abundant and tolerance of neighbours rises temporarily — salmon rivers for one, a whale carcass or productive ice edge for the other.
Senses and adaptations
Both have an exceptional sense of smell, and polar bears are documented locating seals concealed beneath snow and ice at considerable distance. The polar bear's insulation stack — dense underfur, a hollow-cored guard hair layer and a fat layer that can be several centimetres thick — works so well that overheating during exertion becomes a real constraint. Brown bears insulate seasonally instead, laying down fat before denning and carrying a heavy winter coat that is moulted out in spring.

Neither figure travels well between wild and captive settings. Wild brown bears commonly live into their twenties, with individuals documented older, and cub survival across the first two years drives much of the variation. Wild polar bears also reach their twenties, though condition depends heavily on ice conditions in a given region and cohort.
