How they are related

Tortoise refers to one family, Testudinidae, a lineage of land turtles found across Africa, Eurasia, the Americas and several island groups. Box turtle refers to two unrelated sets of animals: Terrapene in North America, which belongs to the pond turtle family Emydidae, and the Asian box turtles of the genus Cuora in Geoemydidae. Both acquired the name for the same reason, a shell that shuts, so it describes a mechanism rather than a relationship.

A note on naming: Tortoise names the family Testudinidae, while box turtle names two unrelated groups, Terrapene in Emydidae and Cuora in Geoemydidae, that independently evolved a closing plastron. Statements about one box turtle group often do not apply to the other.

Telling them apart

You do not need to handle the animal to tell them apart. From the side, a box turtle's plastron shows a seam running across the underside behind the front legs, and when the animal withdraws, the front and rear lobes swing up and close flush. A tortoise's plastron is one rigid plate, so gaps remain around the limbs. Limbs are the second cue: stumpy elephantine hind feet on a tortoise, slimmer legs on a box turtle.

If the shell closes completely, front and back, with no gaps, it is a box turtle. If the underside is rigid and the animal simply pulls in behind stumpy scaled forelimbs, it is a tortoise. If the animal is in North American woodland, box turtle is far more likely; in dry open country in Africa, southern Europe or the American southwest, tortoise is the safer assumption.

Habitat and distribution

Tortoises occupy dry and seasonally dry country, including desert, semi-desert, grassland, scrub and dry forest, and several species dig or use burrows that shelter many other animals. Box turtles need moisture. North American Terrapene live in deciduous woodland, field edges, floodplain and thicket, using leaf litter, damp soil and shallow pools, and Asian Cuora species are more strongly associated with wet forest, streams and marsh edges than most tortoises ever are.

Is a box turtle a tortoise?

The land-dwelling habit evolved more than once in turtles. The practical giveaway is the hinged plastron that lets a box turtle shut itself in completely, a feature that tortoises do not have in that form.
How does a box turtle close its shell completely?
A transverse hinge crosses the plastron behind the front legs, dividing it into two movable lobes joined by flexible connective tissue.
