How they are related
Both are true crocodiles in the genus Crocodylus: Crocodylus porosus, the saltwater or estuarine crocodile, and Crocodylus niloticus, the Nile crocodile. They are congeners rather than the same animal, and genetic work has reshaped the picture around the Nile crocodile in particular, since the West African crocodile, Crocodylus suchus, was recognised as a separate species, so some animals historically called Nile crocodiles, including many mummified in ancient Egypt, belong to that species instead.
Telling them apart
Head features do most of the work. A saltwater crocodile has a pair of raised ridges running forward from the eyes along the snout, a broad heavy snout, and notably small, irregular or absent scales on the nape behind the skull. A Nile crocodile lacks the paired ridges and shows a tidy group of enlarged nuchal scutes just behind the head, with more regularly arranged dorsal armour. Adult colour tends darker in salties and bronze-olive in Nile crocodiles.
Continent first: Indo-Pacific means saltwater crocodile, while Africa and Madagascar mean Nile crocodile. In a zoo, look for the paired ridges running from the eyes down the snout, which the saltwater crocodile has and the Nile crocodile does not, then check behind the head for a defined block of enlarged neck scutes, which points to the Nile crocodile instead.
Habitat and distribution
Saltwater crocodiles use tidal rivers, mangrove, estuaries, coastal swamp and open sea from eastern India through Southeast Asia and Indonesia to New Guinea, northern Australia and the Solomon Islands. Nile crocodiles occupy rivers, lakes, marsh and dam systems across sub-Saharan Africa, parts of the Nile basin and Madagascar, entering estuaries and coastal waters in places. The ranges do not meet, so no wild population of one occurs alongside the other anywhere.
Diet and ecological role
Both are generalist ambush predators whose diet shifts enormously with age, from insects and small fish in hatchlings to fish, reptiles, birds and mammals in adults, with carrion taken readily. Nile crocodiles are noted for congregating at seasonal fish runs and at large carcasses, where many individuals feed together. Saltwater crocodiles include marine prey such as crabs, sea turtles and fish alongside terrestrial animals. Neither feeds continuously, and large individuals can go long periods between substantial meals.
Behaviour
Nesting is the clearest behavioural split. Saltwater crocodiles build mound nests of heaped vegetation and mud on floodplain and swamp margins, timed to the wet season, and the decomposing material helps hold temperature.
