How they are related

Koi are a product of domestication, not of speciation, so they carry variety names rather than a binomial of their own. A patterned fish in a built pond with clear water and filtration is a koi. An olive-bronze fish with dark-edged scales in a river, canal or farm lake is a carp. Both have four barbels at the mouth. If the fish is orange with no barbels at all, it is a goldfish, which is a separate domestication from a different genus.

Carp are native to Eurasia and have been moved by people into rivers, lakes, canals and reservoirs on most continents, favouring warm, slow, turbid lowland water and tolerating conditions that many fishes cannot. Koi live in managed ornamental ponds with filtration and controlled depth, which is a habitat built for them rather than one they occupy naturally. Both are benthic omnivores that root through soft sediment for insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, seeds, plant fragments and detritus, using a protrusible mouth and pharyngeal teeth rather than teeth in the jaws. Wild carp populations in parts of the native Eurasian range have declined through habitat modification, river regulation and hybridisation with escaped farmed stock, while introduced populations on other continents are abundant enough to be targeted for large-scale removal programmes. Assessments of the wild form are therefore not interchangeable with the obvious abundance of farmed and ornamental fish, and a status quoted for one context should never be applied to the other.

Are koi just goldfish bred bigger?
No. Goldfish are a separate domestication from the genus Carassius, while koi come from carp in the genus Cyprinus. The quickest field check is the mouth: koi and other carp have two pairs of fleshy barbels at the corners, and goldfish have none. Body proportions differ too, with koi growing longer and more torpedo-shaped than most goldfish varieties.
Do escaped koi turn back into ordinary-looking carp?
Their descendants tend to. Ornamental colour is maintained by people selecting which fish breed, and in open water the bright patterns offer no advantage and considerable exposure to predators. Over generations, feral populations founded by released koi drift back toward drab olive-bronze carp colouring. The individual fish does not change colour; the population does, through selection and interbreeding with wild-type stock.
Is a mirror carp the same thing as a koi?
No, though they share ancestry. Mirror carp are a scale mutation long established in European food-carp farming, showing scattered large scales on otherwise bare skin. Why is carp a delicacy in some countries and a pest in others?
Because the same tolerance that makes carp easy to farm makes them successful where they were never native. In much of Europe and Asia carp are a long-established food and festival fish raised in managed ponds. In parts of North America and Australia, introduced carp reach high densities, stir up sediment while feeding and alter shallow lake ecosystems, so the same species is managed as a problem rather than a resource.
Can koi and wild carp interbreed?
